Role Overview
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and executing CESR’s communication strategy, managing daily communications activities, and supporting organizational development through compelling storytelling and strategic outreach.
This role is vital in amplifying CESR’s analysis, advocacy, and campaigns by ensuring their messages reach and resonate with diverse audiences, including policymakers, media, civil society, and affected communities worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and Leadership
- Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of CESR’s communications strategy, aligning with organizational priorities and global social justice movements.
- Define success metrics for communication efforts and regularly assess progress against targets.
- Build a shared understanding within the organization of CESR’s key audiences, messages, and narrative goals.
- Develop a clear vision for CESR’s storytelling efforts, focusing on narrative-shifting and narrative-building initiatives that challenge dominant economic discourses.
Content Creation and Storytelling
- Produce and oversee a variety of communication outputs, including news releases, reports, policy briefings, factsheets, blog posts, bulletins, press releases, and audiovisual materials.
- Ensure all outputs are accessible, compelling, and strategically targeted to influence public debates and policy discussions.
- Promote and maintain a distinctive visual identity for CESR, ensuring consistency across all communication channels.
- Utilize design templates and digital tools such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or similar platforms to layout publications, social media graphics, and digital assets.
- Adapt content for diverse audiences, emphasizing clarity, credibility, and political relevance.
Digital and Media Engagement
- Manage and regularly update CESR’s website, overseeing content quality, accessibility, and design.
- Enhance CESR’s online presence by creating engaging social media content for platforms such as LinkedIn, Bluesky, X (formerly Twitter), and relevant listservs.
- Identify opportunities to elevate CESR’s voice in public debates on economic justice, building relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers.
- Track media coverage and develop media outreach strategies to broaden impact and visibility.
Collaboration and Organizational Support
- Collaborate with program teams to integrate communications into project planning and implementation.
- Liaise with external service providers such as web developers, designers, translators, videographers, and photographers.
- Contribute to resource mobilization efforts by developing compelling fundraising and advocacy materials.
- Provide strategic advice and hands-on support to CESR’s leadership, staff, and partners, including strengthening internal communication channels.
- Support multilingual content creation and ensure inclusive, accessible messaging for diverse audiences.
Who You Are
CESR is seeking a strategic communicator with a deep commitment to social justice and a nuanced understanding of narrative power. The ideal candidate will:
- Be experienced in strategic communications within human rights, social justice, or advocacy contexts, with at least five years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrate strong storytelling skills, adept at translating complex research and policy into accessible, persuasive language.
- Be familiar with current digital tools, social media trends, and emerging communication channels.
- Possess excellent writing, editing, and design skills, with a keen sense of voice and audience engagement.
- Have a collaborative, inclusive approach, respecting diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
- Be organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities across different time zones and cultural contexts.
- Have a degree in journalism, communications, or related fields, or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience working on economic justice, human rights, or social movements.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design.
- Fluency in additional languages, especially Spanish.
- Experience managing websites and digital content management systems.
- Familiarity with multimedia content production (video, photography, graphics).
