The National Research Foundation has announced its Postdoctoral Fellowships Programme for 2027, providing funding opportunities for emerging researchers seeking to advance their academic careers and contribute to national research priorities.
The fellowship programme supports postdoctoral research training in a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, technology, social sciences, and humanities. It forms part of South Africa’s broader strategy to strengthen the national research system, cultivate the next generation of scientists, and address critical skills shortages.
The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Science and Innovation and the Department of Higher Education and Training.
The framework establishes funding guidelines for three fellowship categories designed to strengthen research capacity and innovation in South Africa.
The fellowships include:
The Freestanding and Innovation Fellowships are funded by the Department of Science and Innovation, while the Scarce Skills Fellowships are financed through the National Skills Fund under the Department of Higher Education and Training.
These fellowships aim to support early-career researchers who are pursuing advanced research training while contributing to knowledge production and innovation across South Africa’s research institutions.
The fellowship programme is aligned with the mandate of the National Research Foundation, established under the National Research Foundation Act (Act No. 23 of 1998). The organization plays a critical role in promoting human capacity development, research excellence, and scientific infrastructure development.
South Africa’s research ecosystem faces the challenge of an aging scientific workforce, which makes the development of a new generation of researchers essential. Strategic investments in research training and postdoctoral development are therefore required to ensure the country remains competitive within the global knowledge economy.
The programme also supports the objectives of the National System of Innovation, promoting technological development, research commercialization, and socio-economic growth.
In addition, the initiative responds to the Skills Development Act (Act No. 97 of 1998), which seeks to strengthen national skills development and improve access to high-quality education and training opportunities, particularly for historically disadvantaged populations.
The NRF Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to support early-career researchers while strengthening South Africa’s national research capacity.
Key objectives include:
Through these initiatives, the programme aims to renew and strengthen the national research workforce.
Postdoctoral fellows are supported across a broad range of academic disciplines. The programme prioritizes research aligned with national priority areas outlined in the Science, Technology and Innovation Decadal Plan (2022–2032).
Key thematic research areas include:
The fellowships support research in numerous disciplines, including:
The NRF aims to maintain a disciplinary balance, with approximately:
Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements to qualify for the fellowship programme.

The programme allows for funding of up to R20,000 during the fellowship period for equipment that enhances accessibility and research participation.
Assistive devices may include technologies designed to improve functional capabilities for individuals with disabilities.
The programme is strongly aligned with national transformation and equity objectives.
Priority support is provided to historically disadvantaged groups, including:
Equity targets for the Freestanding and Innovation Fellowships include:
