The 2027 Thuthuka Funding Instrument, offered by the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa, is now open for applications. This program supports the development of early-career researchers by strengthening research capacity and promoting academic excellence.
Applicants must be full-time employees (permanent or contract) at NRF-recognised public universities or research institutions, and be South African citizens or permanent residents. They should also be academic staff, staff with joint academic and administrative roles where research is a deliverable, or researchers at science councils or NRF-recognized institutions.
The funding supports research development, postgraduate student supervision and training, and research capacity building within institutions, aiming to help early-career academics establish sustainable research careers.
Applicants are advised to carefully review the complete call documentation and application guidelines available on the National Research Foundation website before preparing their proposals.
