Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with more than 78% of citizens under the age of 35. Despite efforts to expand youth-focused opportunities, unemployment remains high and many young people struggle to find stable sources of income.
As an Economic Empowerment Advisor, volunteers help address this challenge by supporting entrepreneurship initiatives, strengthening community savings programs, and helping individuals develop practical job and business skills.
By working directly with community groups, volunteers contribute to sustainable economic growth while gaining meaningful international development experience.

You will help community groups identify sustainable income-generating activities such as:
Beekeeping
Soap making
Jam and juice production
Small agricultural enterprises
Volunteers plan and facilitate workshops on:

You will support groups in building savings programs and accessing low-interest microcredit opportunities.
Volunteers may also support environmental and productivity initiatives such as:
Irrigation techniques
Water harvesting systems
Tree planting programs
Depending on local priorities, volunteers may contribute to projects related to:
Nutrition education
Malaria prevention
Youth life-skills training
Before beginning fieldwork, volunteers participate in 10 weeks of intensive training that covers:
Microcredit mobilization
Community analysis
Project design and implementation
Local languages and cross-cultural communication
During this period, participants may learn local languages such as Luganda, Ateso, Lango, or Lusoga.
After training, volunteers move to a rural or peri-urban community where they collaborate directly with local residents to launch economic initiatives.
Volunteers live in rural or peri-urban communities, including villages, towns, school campuses, and clinic compounds.
Living conditions are designed to encourage cultural immersion and meaningful community integration. Volunteers gain a deep understanding of Ugandan culture while working alongside community members.
Competitive applicants should meet at least one of the following:
A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in business or a related discipline, or
Five years of professional experience in business management
There are no pre-existing language requirements for this position.
Preferred qualifications include:
Experience in entrepreneurship, budgeting, marketing, or financial literacy
Basic computer skills
Experience training or facilitating workshops for small groups

Couples may apply to serve together if both partners qualify for positions in different sectors. Each partner must submit a separate application.
Couples typically live together during training but may occasionally be separated for field-based assignments.
The application process typically takes about nine months from submission to departure. During this period, candidates complete interviews, medical clearance, and legal checks before final placement.
