    Job Description

    Overview

    The MacArthur Foundation is seeking a Program Officer for its Nigeria Office to lead grantmaking in new areas focusing on the intersection of technology and society, including artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. This is a 5-year, time-limited role with the possibility of extension.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement grantmaking strategies in partnership with Nigeria and Chicago offices.
    • Manage a portfolio of grants, including reviewing proposals, monitoring performance, and maintaining grantee contact.
    • Conduct research, due diligence, and prepare grant recommendations.
    • Represent the Foundation at conferences and public events.
    • Build and sustain relationships with colleagues, leaders, and organizations in relevant fields.
    • Stay informed about current events and developments in the field.

    Requirements

    • Graduate training and at least 8 years of experience as a policy professional, researcher, or practitioner focused on technology and society issues, including AI and emerging technologies.
    • Grantmaking or grant-seeking experience is desirable.
    • Solid understanding of the history, trends, empirical research, and theoretical literature in technology and society.
    • Good understanding of public policies and their dynamics.
    • Ability to connect research, policy, and practice.
    • Productive working relationships with government, civil society, community-based organizations, and academic institutions.
    • Excellent analytical and communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
    • Experience in strategic communications and project management.
    • Self-confident, collegial, diplomatic, and appreciative of a grantmaking institution's role.
    • Computer literate with comfort using new applications.
    • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
    • Ability to organize and convey problems and issues clearly and succinctly.
    • Openness to diverse views and ability to manage multiple tasks.

    Benefits

    Annual salary starts at $62,000 USD.
