    About the Artists at Risk Connection

    Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) is a prominent international nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding artists and cultural workers under threat due to their creative expression.

    Since its founding in 2017, ARC has championed artistic freedom and human rights by providing emergency and resilience grants, advocacy, security resources, training, and referral services. The organization has supported over 2,300 artists from more than 85 countries, delivering more than 1,000 emergency grants, resilience grants, and fellowships.

    ARC’s mission is rooted in defending the fundamental right to artistic freedom and ensuring the safety and security of artists worldwide.

    The organization works closely with a broad network of partner organizations, advocacy groups, and artists themselves to respond swiftly to threats and promote resilience.

    The Role: Artist Protection Consultant

    ARC is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and compassionate Artist Protection Consultant to support its protection programs.

    This is a remote, independent contractor role designed for individuals passionate about human rights, artistic freedom, and social justice. The successful candidate will work closely with ARC leadership and team members to facilitate grantmaking, case management, and referral processes for at-risk artists and cultural workers.

    The Consultant will play a vital role in coordinating urgent assistance, conducting contextual research, maintaining accurate case documentation, and supporting advocacy efforts. The position offers an opportunity to be directly involved in safeguarding artists under threat while working within a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Case Management & Emergency Grant Coordination

    The core of this role involves supporting individual cases of artists under threat, ensuring that each artist receives timely and sensitive assistance. Responsibilities include:

    • Providing case management support for requests for assistance, maintaining compassionate, secure, and clear communication.
    • Facilitating referrals to external resources, including NGOs, legal aid, or other support services.

    • Coordinating the grant application process, verifying applications against ARC’s criteria, and assessing risks.
    • Maintaining detailed case records, including application materials, risk assessments, correspondence, and outcomes.
    • Supporting internal review and decision-making processes, including post-grant follow-up and reporting.

    Research & Advocacy Support

    The Consultant will conduct in-depth research related to human rights, artistic freedom, and country-specific risk factors. Responsibilities include:

    • Verifying allegations of threats or risks using credible sources and partner consultations.
    • Drafting impactful advocacy materials, case summaries, and briefing documents in response to urgent threats.
    • Monitoring global trends and emerging threats to artistic freedom, documenting relevant developments for internal and public use.

    Financial & Compliance Administration

    This role involves coordination with ARC’s operational teams to ensure the proper disbursement of grants and adherence to compliance standards:

    • Coordinating grant disbursements in collaboration with finance and external intermediaries.
    • Conducting compliance checks, including OFAC screenings and documentation verification.
    • Maintaining accurate financial records related to protection grants, ensuring transparency and accountability.

    Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination

    The Consultant will serve as a liaison between at-risk artists and external partners:

    • Supporting communication and referrals to NGOs, art residencies, fellowships, and other organizations.
    • Identifying new resources and opportunities for artists in need.
    • Ensuring effective information-sharing and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

    Data Management & Reporting

    Maintaining accurate records and contributing to organizational learning are critical components:

    • Tracking case progress, deadlines, and deliverables using ARC’s CRM and case management systems.
    • Documenting trends, challenges, and lessons learned to inform ARC’s protection strategies.
    • Assisting in preparing narrative reports for funders and stakeholders, highlighting protection outcomes.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social justice, human rights, law, political science, or related fields.
    • Minimum of five years’ professional experience in grantmaking, case management, legal or social work, or advocacy work related to human rights or arts protection.
    • Familiarity with CRM systems and case management databases.

    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, with proficiency in an additional language (preferably Arabic or Farsi).
    • Strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and creative problem-solving abilities.
    • Proven ability to handle sensitive information securely and with discretion.

    • Ability to work independently in a remote setting while collaborating effectively with a small team.
    • A committed passion for human rights, artistic freedom, and social justice causes.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with artists, cultural workers, activists, or human rights defenders.
    • Familiarity with online tools such as G-Suite, grant tracking software, or case management systems.
    • Background in nonprofit or international NGO environments.

    • Trauma-informed or survivor-centered work experience.
    • Knowledge of country-specific risk contexts and human rights research.

    Compensation and Contract Details

    This position is structured as an initial 4-6 month independent contractor engagement. It does not include employee benefits but offers competitive compensation:

    • Monthly retainer: $5,000 – $6,000 (based on experience).
    • Location: Remote, with some availability during U.S. Eastern Time hours.
