This senior leadership role sits at the intersection of advocacy, research, and storytelling. The Director will shape how Prospera engages in policy and funding spaces, strengthen the organization’s collective voice, and ensure that data and evidence are strategically leveraged to influence narratives, move power, and mobilize resources.
Reporting into senior leadership and serving as a member of the Executive Team (ET), the Director will provide strategic oversight across advocacy, research, and communications functions, ensuring that Prospera’s external engagement is evidence-based, cohesive, compelling, and impactful.
About Prospera
Prospera International Network of Women’s and Feminist Funds (INWFF) is a global membership network of independent women’s and feminist funds dedicated to redistributing resources to diverse feminist movements across the Global South and East.
Currently, Prospera’s network includes 49 women’s and feminist funds operating in 174 countries and territories, mobilizing over USD 300 million annually. Through collective action, the network works to transform global philanthropy by shifting power and directing flexible funding to activists, organizations, and movements advancing gender justice and social transformation.
Prospera operates through a small but impactful global Secretariat team. The organization is grounded in feminist values and principles, practicing collective care, self-determination, justice, and inclusion in its internal culture and external engagements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement an integrated Advocacy, Communications, and Research strategy aligned with Prospera’s broader strategic framework.
- Advise the Executive Director on public positioning, policy engagement, communications priorities, and reputational risk management.
- Serve as a member of the Executive Team, contributing to cross-organizational leadership and decision-making.
- Ensure advocacy priorities are grounded in credible research and responsive to emerging political and funding landscapes.
- Oversee budget planning and management for the advocacy, research, and communications portfolio.
2. Advocacy and Public Affairs
- Lead the design and implementation of high-impact advocacy initiatives targeting policymakers, funders, and key stakeholders.
- Build and sustain strategic relationships with funders, government representatives, civil society coalitions, members, and allies.
- Oversee engagement with Prospera’s membership network on advocacy and research priorities.
- Guide the development of policy briefs, position papers, and public statements informed by rigorous research.
- Represent Prospera in high-level forums, conferences, joint initiatives, and media engagements.
3. Strategic Communications
- Develop and steward a clear organizational narrative and messaging framework that integrates evidence and storytelling.
- Oversee media relations, digital engagement, brand positioning, and content strategy.
- Supervise the production of reports, publications, and multimedia materials that combine credible data with compelling narratives.
- Establish rapid-response protocols to ensure coordinated, timely messaging during crises or emerging issues.
4. Research, Data, and Evidence
- Directly supervise the Research and Advocacy Manager, ensuring high-quality data collection, analysis, and visualization.
- Translate research findings into accessible advocacy and communications products.
- Oversee the development of fact sheets, reports, and knowledge products for internal and external audiences.
- Strengthen systems for data-driven decision-making across the organization.
5. Team Leadership and Capacity Building
- Lead, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary Advocacy, Research, and Communications team.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture aligned with feminist values.
- Provide coaching and training to enhance advocacy, communications, and data literacy within the Secretariat and network.
6. Monitoring, Learning, and Accountability
- Establish performance indicators aligned with Prospera’s Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) framework.
- Track and report on advocacy reach, influence, and impact using qualitative and quantitative metrics.
- Ensure ethical standards, safeguarding principles, and cultural sensitivity are upheld in all external engagements.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Policy, Law, International Relations, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 8–10 years of progressively responsible experience in advocacy, public affairs, or strategic communications within the nonprofit or social justice sector.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing and leading teams.
- Strong knowledge of feminist philanthropy, feminist funding debates, and development cooperation discussions.
- Demonstrated experience influencing funders’ policies and practices.
- Proven track record of leading integrated advocacy, research, and communications strategies.
- Excellent writing, editing, and public speaking skills.
- Fluency in English (additional languages such as Spanish or French are an asset).
- Ability to navigate complex political and cultural contexts diplomatically.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 30%.
Preferred
- Experience working with US or European philanthropy.
- Experience in international organizations or networks.
- Experience serving on or working closely with an Executive Team.
Working Conditions
- Remote role with flexibility in work location (home office or co-working space).
- 35-hour workweek, Monday to Thursday, with flexibility to accommodate multiple time zones.
- Up to 30% travel required.
Salary and Benefits
- Annual Salary: USD 92,000 – USD 124,000 (based on experience and qualifications).
- Medical Allowance: USD 5,000 per annum (covering employee and dependents).
- Wellness & Family Support Allowance: USD 2,000 per annum.
- Retirement Allowance: 10% of base salary.
