    Job Description

    The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is seeking an experienced Programme Officer – Persons with Disabilities (PWD) and Refugees to support its mission of advancing gender equity and equality in education across Africa. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening inclusive education programmes that empower African girls and young women, particularly those living with disabilities and those in refugee communities.

    This position offers an opportunity to contribute to transformative education initiatives across multiple African countries while working with a dynamic pan-African organization committed to inclusive development.

    The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is a pan-African non-governmental organization operating through a network of 34 National Chapters across the continent. FAWE works to advance gender equality in education by influencing policy, fostering positive societal attitudes, and promoting inclusive practices that ensure girls and women can access and thrive in education systems.

    Position Overview

    The Programme Officer – PWD and Refugees will provide leadership and technical expertise in advancing social inclusion within FAWE programmes, as outlined in the FAWE Strategic Plan (2024–2028) and the organizational work plan.

    The role focuses on ensuring girls and young women with disabilities and refugee backgrounds have access to quality education and skills training opportunities that prepare them for the world of work.

    Job Details

    • Position: Programme Officer – PWD and Refugees

    • Organization: Forum for African Women Educationalists

    • Location: Nairobi, Kenya (Regional Office)

    • Contract Type: Fixed-term contract (3 years), with possible extension based on performance and funding availability

    • Reporting To: Senior Programme Officer

    • Travel: Frequent travel across the region

    The role will collaborate closely with FAWE teams, National Chapters, civil society organizations, and regional policy bodies.

    Key Result Areas

    The Programme Officer will lead initiatives that strengthen the inclusion of persons with disabilities and refugees within FAWE’s education programmes.

    Core focus areas include:

    • Strategic leadership on social inclusion initiatives

    • Programme research, evaluation, and sustainability planning

    • Resource mobilization for inclusive education programmes

    Key Roles and Responsibilities

    1. Programme Management (60%)

    • Lead social inclusion initiatives within FAWE programmes across 10 African countries:

      • Uganda

      • Ethiopia

      • Rwanda

      • Zambia

      • Malawi

      • Zimbabwe

      • Tanzania

      • Senegal

      • Liberia

      • Ghana

    • Promote innovative strategies that integrate gender equity, transformative education, and social inclusion.

    • Ensure strong quality assurance systems for programme implementation.

    • Support partnerships and programme expansion initiatives.

    2. Capacity Building and Programme Development (20%)

    • Conduct internal assessments to identify capacity-building needs related to social inclusion.

    • Support FAWE National Chapters in strengthening inclusive education programming.

    • Build alliances with organizations working with persons with disabilities and refugee communities.

    3. Partnership Building and Advocacy (10%)

    • Strengthen partnerships with project partners, national chapters, and regional stakeholders.

    • Advocate for increased civic space and education opportunities for refugee girls and girls with disabilities.

    • Collaborate with FAWE advocacy and partnerships teams to amplify marginalized voices.

    4. Resource Mobilization (10%)

    • Identify funding opportunities for social inclusion initiatives.

    • Provide technical input in grant proposals and funding pitches.

    • Participate in engagement and negotiations with development partners.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Applicants should possess:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences such as:

      • Education

      • Gender and Development

      • Public Health

      • Political Science

      • Philosophy

      • Law

      • Project Management

      • Or a related field

    • Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 3 years in the NGO sector.

    • Experience managing multi-country partnerships and consortiums.

    • Strong skills in report writing, programme documentation, and presentations.

    • Knowledge of education and social inclusion issues.

    Bilingual proficiency in English and French is highly desirable.
