The African Research Universities Alliance has launched an exciting Early-Career Research Fellowship programme aimed at strengthening Africa’s research capacity.
Supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, this initiative will fund up to 42 early-career researchers to conduct high-impact, globally competitive research.
This fellowship represents a major opportunity for young African scholars to collaborate with leading institutions, access advanced research environments, and contribute to solving pressing global and regional challenges.
The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship is designed to support emerging researchers by placing them within top-tier academic networks. Fellows will be hosted at institutions affiliated with ARUA’s 13 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and 22 Africa-Europe Clusters of Excellence (CoREs).
Each fellowship lasts six months and must be completed between March 2026 and February 2027. The programme is structured to provide intensive research time, enabling fellows to focus on producing high-quality outputs while building international collaborations.
Applicants can choose between two fellowship cycles. Option 1 runs from March to August 2026, while Option 2 spans September 2026 to February 2027. This flexibility allows candidates to align the fellowship with their academic schedules and research commitments.
The application deadlines vary depending on the chosen fellowship period. For Option 1 (March–August 2026), applications closed on 22 January 2026. For Option 2 (September 2026–February 2027), the deadline is 15 July 2026.
Given the competitive nature of the programme, early preparation is essential. Candidates are encouraged to begin assembling required documents and refining their research proposals well in advance of the deadline.
The fellowship is specifically targeted at early-career researchers who have already obtained a PhD. Applicants must be no older than 35 years at the time of application, making this programme highly focused on nurturing young academic talent.
A notable feature of the initiative is its commitment to gender equity. At least 70% of the fellowships are reserved for female candidates, reflecting a strong emphasis on supporting women in research and academia.
Applicants are expected to be actively engaged in research areas aligned with ARUA’s Centres of Excellence or Africa-Europe CoREs. Having access to relevant data and a clearly defined research focus will strengthen an application.
The fellowship supports research across a wide range of disciplines, depending on the focus areas of the selected Centre of Excellence or Cluster. These may include fields such as climate change, public health, governance, agriculture, energy, and digital innovation.
By working within these networks, fellows gain access to cutting-edge research infrastructure, expert mentorship, and collaborative opportunities with leading scholars from Africa and Europe.

Applicants must submit a comprehensive set of documents to be considered for the fellowship. These include a cover letter, full CV, institutional letter of support, and proof of PhD completion.
In addition, candidates must provide a brief concept note outlining their proposed research project, along with two academic writing samples. A copy of the biodata page of a valid passport is also required.
Applicants must also provide contact details for two academic referees who can support their application and verify their research capabilities.
The selection process is highly competitive and based on several key factors. These include the quality and originality of the research proposal, the applicant’s academic track record, and the relevance of the proposed work to ARUA’s thematic priorities.
Candidates will also be assessed on their potential to contribute to global research conversations and their ability to collaborate effectively within international research teams.
