Apply for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Protection Internship
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced a new internship opportunity for aspiring professionals interested in migration, humanitarian protection, and international development.
The “Intern – Protection” position, based in Pretoria, South Africa, is part of the organization’s 2026 Global Access Internship Programme and aims to attract talented students and recent graduates from underrepresented member states.
Applications for the six-month internship are open until July 5, 2026, with the possibility of an extension depending on operational needs and funding availability.
Founded in 1951, IOM is a related organization of the United Nations and is globally recognized as the leading intergovernmental agency in the field of migration. The organization works closely with governments, civil society organizations, and international partners to promote humane and orderly migration while supporting displaced populations and vulnerable communities worldwide.
According to the vacancy notice, the internship is hosted under the Protection Regional Thematic Unit (PXD RTU), which operates within IOM’s Regional Office structure. The unit provides technical expertise, thematic guidance, and strategic support to Country Offices across Southern Africa on issues related to protection, migration governance, and displacement solutions.
The selected intern will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Thematic Specialist for Protection and collaborate with regional and country-level teams. Responsibilities will include supporting project development, reviewing reports and proposals, monitoring thematic trends, assisting with policy development, and contributing to capacity-building activities within the region.
IOM stated that the internship will expose participants to practical experience in migration and protection programming within an international and multicultural working environment. Interns will also gain experience in project monitoring, evaluation, knowledge management, and technical coordination.
The organization emphasized that the role is designed to strengthen participants’ communication, analytical, and reporting skills. The successful candidate will assist in preparing internal reports, presentations, briefing notes, speeches, and thematic guidance documents related to protection and migration issues.
In addition, the intern will support coordination between Country Offices and the Regional Office, ensuring the sharing of thematic information and best practices across Southern Africa. The role may also involve participation in conferences, workshops, and regional meetings related to migration protection and humanitarian response.
To qualify for the internship, applicants must either be enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program or currently pursuing postgraduate studies in fields such as Political Science, Social Sciences, International Relations, Migration Studies, Law, or Business Administration. Recent graduates who completed their studies within the last 12 months are also eligible to apply.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong interest in protection and migration-related issues. Previous experience working with governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations, or international agencies will be considered an advantage.
IOM also highlighted the importance of strong writing, analytical, and communication skills for the role. Knowledge of project development, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting processes is considered beneficial. Fluency in English is mandatory, while working knowledge of French or Portuguese would provide an added advantage during the recruitment process.
As part of the United Nations system, IOM places significant emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and ethical conduct. The organization encourages applications from persons with disabilities and individuals from underrepresented nationalities. The agency maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination, sexual exploitation, abuse of authority, and harassment.
The internship falls under IOM’s Global Access Internship Programme, which specifically targets applicants from member states with lower representation within the organization. The initiative aims to create more equitable opportunities for young professionals seeking careers in international development and humanitarian affairs.
Although the internship provides only a modest monthly stipend, IOM confirmed that travel arrangements and visa-related costs for selected candidates under this programme will be covered. Interns will also receive occupational accident and illness coverage during the internship period. However, candidates are required to arrange their own medical insurance for non-work-related health issues before commencing duties.
The organization advised interested applicants to research the cost of living in Pretoria before applying. Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital, hosts numerous international organizations, diplomatic missions, and regional institutions, making it a strategic hub for migration and humanitarian operations across Southern Africa.
IOM noted that recruitment is conducted exclusively through its official e-Recruitment system and warned candidates against fraudulent recruitment schemes. The organization reiterated that it does not charge fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further assessments or interviews. Selection will be based on academic qualifications, relevant experience, technical competencies, and alignment with IOM’s core organizational values, including professionalism, integrity, empathy, accountability, and teamwork.
The internship represents a valuable opportunity for young professionals seeking hands-on experience in migration governance, humanitarian protection, and regional policy coordination within the United Nations system.
