The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) has announced that applications are now open for the Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth PhD Studentships, a competitive funding opportunity supporting doctoral research on Commonwealth-related themes in the humanities and social sciences.

The programme is designed to encourage comparative, policy-relevant, and cross-country research across the Commonwealth network. Applications will close on 31 July 2026.

About the ACU and the Studentship Programme

The Association of Commonwealth Universities is the world’s oldest international university network, established in 1913. It connects more than 400 member institutions across over 40 countries, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, knowledge exchange, and academic mobility.

The Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth Studentships are jointly funded by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, its publisher Routledge, and the ACU. The initiative aims to support doctoral researchers whose work engages with Commonwealth-wide issues or comparative international themes.

    Purpose of the PhD Studentships

The studentships are intended to support PhD researchers exploring topics relevant to the Commonwealth, including political, economic, historical, and development-focused themes. The programme seeks to strengthen academic contributions that address shared challenges across member countries while promoting international scholarly engagement.

Research proposals must meet at least one of the following criteria:

    • Relate to the Commonwealth as a whole or a Commonwealth-wide institution or organisation
    • Include a comparative Commonwealth perspective across multiple countries
    • Address issues relevant to more than one Commonwealth member state

    Funding Value and Structure

The programme offers two studentships, each valued at up to GBP 5,500. The awards are divided into two categories:

    • One studentship for PhD students registered at universities in the United Kingdom
    • One studentship for PhD students registered at ACU member universities outside the United Kingdom

Although modest in scale, the funding is designed to support research development, fieldwork engagement, and dissemination activities linked to Commonwealth-focused scholarship.

    Academic Outputs and Dissemination Requirements

Successful applicants are required to produce academic outputs that contribute to broader public and scholarly engagement. These include:

    • A 4,000–6,000 word research article suitable for consideration by The Round Table journal
    • A podcast presenting aspects of their research for publication on the journal’s platform

These outputs are intended to enhance visibility of early-career research and promote accessible dissemination of academic findings across policy and public audiences.

    Mentorship Component

A distinctive feature of the studentship is its structured mentorship requirement. Each applicant must identify and collaborate with a mentor based at a university in a Commonwealth country different from their own.

    The mentor’s role includes:

    • Conducting at least two virtual meetings with the student during the award period
    • Providing academic guidance, feedback, and professional insights
    • Supporting the student in publishing, networking, and research development
    • Encouraging critical engagement with new perspectives in their field
    • Contributing to either the final article or podcast output

Mentors will receive an honorarium of GBP 500, payable at the conclusion of the studentship, and are required to adhere to the ACU mentor code of conduct.

    Eligibility and Academic Scope

Applications are welcomed from PhD students across a broad range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Priority is typically given to fields aligned with The Round Table journal, including:

    • Politics and international relations
    • International economics
    • International history
    • Geography
    • Law
    • Development studies
    • Area studies

While applications from STEM disciplines are generally not accepted, exceptions may be considered where the research demonstrates a clear policy relevance or engagement with Commonwealth-wide issues.

Importantly, applicants are not required to have an existing Commonwealth focus in their PhD research. The programme encourages proposals that integrate a Commonwealth dimension into ongoing academic work.

    Application Process

Applicants must follow a structured submission process that includes:

    • Reviewing the official application guidance
    • Downloading and completing the studentship application form
    • Preparing a current academic CV
    • Submitting both documents via email to the ACU secretariat

Email submissions should be sent to: secretary@commonwealthroundtable.co.uk

Applicants are also encouraged to consult previous award recipients and application resources available through The Round Table journal.

    Strengthening Commonwealth Academic Collaboration

The Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth Studentships form part of a broader effort by the ACU to strengthen academic collaboration across Commonwealth countries. By supporting doctoral researchers, the initiative promotes comparative scholarship and fosters intellectual exchange across diverse regions and institutions.

The programme also reflects a growing emphasis on interdisciplinary and policy-oriented research that addresses global challenges through international cooperation.

    Encouraging Early-Career Research Excellence

As universities continue to expand international research partnerships, the studentship offers a targeted opportunity for PhD scholars to develop their work within a global academic framework. The combination of funding, mentorship, and publication opportunities positions the programme as a valuable stepping stone for early-career researchers seeking to engage with international policy and academic networks.

Applications remain open until 31 July 2026, and eligible candidates are encouraged to apply early to ensure full consideration.
