Students interested in democracy research and quantitative data analysis can now apply for Fall 2026 internship positions at the V-Dem Institute, based at the University of Gothenburg.

The internship offers hands-on experience in one of the world’s leading democracy research projects and is ideal for students pursuing careers in political science, international relations, data analysis, or research communication.

    Application deadline: 12 April 2026.

    About the V-Dem Institute

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a global research initiative that provides a multidimensional dataset measuring democracy worldwide. Rather than defining democracy solely through elections, V-Dem distinguishes five high-level principles:

    • Electoral democracy
    • Liberal democracy
    • Participatory democracy
    • Deliberative democracy
    • Egalitarian democracy

    The institute works with:

    • Over 50 social scientists across six continents
    • More than 4,000 country experts
    • An international advisory board

The V-Dem dataset is widely used by researchers, policymakers, and international organizations studying democratic development and political regimes.

The V-Dem Institute is seeking two to four highly motivated interns for Fall 2026. Candidates may specialize in one or combine both of the following areas:

Students with prior coursework in quantitative research methods are especially encouraged to apply.

    Social Science Research Communication

    • Assisting in communicating research findings

    • Translating complex data into accessible content
    • Contributing to public-facing research materials

Strong writing and communication skills are highly desirable.

    • Duration options:
      • 10 weeks
