UNEP Traditional Knowledge Internship 2026 (Remote Option Available): Work on Global Biodiversity Policy Ahead of COP17

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is now accepting applications for a six-month internship focused on traditional knowledge and engagement with indigenous peoples and local communities.

This opportunity is linked to preparations for major Convention on Biological Diversity processes, including COP17 and the Nature and Culture Summit. The internship can be undertaken at the Montreal duty station in Canada or remotely.

About the UNEP Internship 2026

Hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this internship supports work under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The selected intern will contribute to biodiversity governance efforts that integrate culture, indigenous knowledge systems, and environmental sustainability.

The internship provides emerging professionals with exposure to multilateral environmental negotiations and global biodiversity policymaking in preparation for COP17.

Internship Focus and Responsibilities

The intern will support research, drafting, and coordination activities related to biodiversity, culture, and traditional knowledge systems.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conducting research on biodiversity, indigenous peoples, and traditional knowledge

• Drafting background documents and meeting materials

• Supporting coordination with stakeholders and indigenous representatives

• Assisting in preparations for COP17 discussions

• Contributing to engagement processes linked to the Nature and Culture Summit

This role provides hands-on experience in global environmental governance and collaboration with indigenous communities at the international level.

Language Requirements

• Fluency in English (oral and written) is mandatory

• Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is considered an asset

This internship is unpaid.

Interns are responsible for:

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet one of the following academic requirements:

• Be enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or PhD programme

• Be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree

• Have recently completed a Bachelor’s degree

Candidates should demonstrate:

• Academic background in environmental studies, indigenous studies, law, public policy, or related disciplines

• Strong analytical and writing skills

• Knowledge of indigenous peoples, traditional knowledge, or biodiversity governance

• Computer literacy in standard software tools

• Interest in multilateral environmental processes

• Ability to work across diverse cultural contexts

• Alignment with the values of the United Nations

Professional work experience is not mandatory, but relevant academic specialization is required.
