The Faculty of History at the University of Oxford has announced a call for Expressions of Interest for the 2027 British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme, offering early-career researchers the opportunity to strengthen their academic careers at one of the world’s leading universities.

The fellowship scheme is designed to support outstanding postdoctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences by helping them advance high-quality publishable research while gaining valuable experience in teaching and academic life. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to further develop their research profiles and improve their prospects of securing permanent academic positions in the future.

The awards are expected to be taken up in autumn 2027.

    Prestigious Opportunity for Early-Career Researchers

The British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship is widely regarded as one of the most competitive and prestigious opportunities for early-career scholars in the humanities and social sciences. The scheme focuses primarily on supporting researchers in completing a significant research project while also enabling them to engage with the wider academic environment.

The Faculty of History at the University of Oxford is now inviting eligible applicants to participate in its internal Expression of Interest competition, which will determine which candidates receive institutional support for the official British Academy application process.

Due to the large number of expected applications, Oxford’s Faculty of History has established an internal selection process to identify the strongest proposals before submission to the British Academy.

    Internal Application Process and Deadline

Applicants interested in securing support from Oxford’s Faculty of History must submit all required materials by Wednesday, 15 July 2026.

Applications should be sent via email in Word or PDF format to rf@history.ox.ac.uk. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

    Required application documents include:

    • A draft application using the Faculty’s official Expression of Interest template
    • A research proposal aligned with the British Academy outline stage requirements
    • Optional statements explaining career breaks or circumstances affecting research output
    • A mentor support statement submitted separately by the chosen Oxford faculty mentor

Candidates must identify and secure agreement from a Faculty of History member willing to act as their mentor before applying. The mentor must submit a 400-word statement of support to the Research Office by the same deadline.

The Faculty emphasized that the internal review process will be highly competitive and only the strongest applications will move forward to the British Academy stage.

    Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

The fellowship is open to researchers in the humanities and social sciences who will be based at an eligible UK university or research organization during the fellowship period.

    Eligible applicants include:

    • British citizens
    • Nationals from the European Economic Area (EEA)
    • Researchers of any nationality who obtained their doctorate from a UK university
    • Applicants who can demonstrate a strong prior association with the UK academic community

Applicants must also meet the early-career researcher requirements established by the British Academy.

Candidates are expected to have completed their viva voce examination between 1 April 2024 and 1 April 2027. Additionally, applicants must already hold postdoctoral status by the time the British Academy’s Research Awards Committee convenes.

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to carefully review the full scheme guidance notes for detailed eligibility information and exemption criteria.

    Supporting High-Impact Historical Research

The initiative also aligns with Oxford’s wider commitment to supporting academic excellence, diversity, and inclusion in higher education and research.

    Important Dates and Application Preparation

Applicants planning to apply are encouraged to begin preparing their materials early, particularly in securing an Oxford faculty mentor and refining their research proposals.

    Key application details include:
