    Job Description

Are you an undergraduate student curious about how data shapes scientific discovery and research careers? The Data Analytics for Science Immersion Experience (DASIE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) offers a fully funded, immersive summer experience designed to introduce students to the real-world use of data analytics across scientific disciplines. The program brings together students from accredited U.S. colleges and universities — including those on student visas — to explore the intersection of data and science while building community, learning from experts, and contemplating future academic and professional paths.

This nine-day residential experience takes place at CMU’s Pittsburgh campus in May 2026, and is tailored for current undergraduate students and first-year master’s students interested in data-informed scientific work. All travel, lodging, transportation, and meals are covered, and participants receive a stipend, making DASIE not just an educational opportunity — but an accessible one.

    What DASIE Is All About

DASIE is a weeklong immersion experience hosted by the Mellon College of Science (MCS) at Carnegie Mellon University. It is designed to introduce students to the role of data analytics in science by connecting them with faculty, researchers, and practitioners who use data in their work. The program recognizes the growing importance of data skills across scientific fields and aims to help students understand how data informs questions, decisions, and innovation in scientific research.

During DASIE, students take part in structured tutorial sessions, workshops, presentations, and discussions led by CMU faculty and experts from organizations such as the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. These sessions showcase examples of data-driven scientific work and highlight career and academic paths that data analytics can unlock.

In addition to scheduled program activities, DASIE provides space for participants to network with peers from a range of institutions, meet faculty and staff, and build community. Group activities encourage reflection on students’ own interests and goals while exposing them to diverse uses of data across scientific contexts.

    Why DASIE Matters

As data becomes central to nearly every scientific discipline — from genomics to climate modeling, from drug discovery to astrophysics — students with data literacy and analytical skills gain a competitive edge in both academic and professional arenas. Programs like DASIE help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world scientific data practices at world-class research institutions.

Beyond the technical exposure, DASIE offers students the chance to meet faculty, industry professionals, and fellow students with shared interests. These interactions help participants expand their understanding of how data shapes decision-making and scientific inquiry, and can inspire the pursuit of graduate work or careers in data-rich environments.

Students who have participated in past iterations of DASIE report gaining clarity about their academic goals, building confidence in their capabilities, and connecting with communities and pathways they might not have otherwise explored. Some have even gone on to launch student organizations or pursue advanced studies in data science and analytics.

    What Participants Experience

The DASIE program runs from May 12 to May 20, 2026, with on-campus programming from May 13–19. Session days typically begin early and include a mix of instructional content, hands-on activities, and professional development. A group activity off campus fosters community and adds a fun learning dimension outside the classroom.

All participants receive the following as part of the fully funded experience:

    • Round-trip airfare or mileage reimbursement to Pittsburgh
    • Stipend for incidental expenses
    • Hotel accommodations in double rooms nearby campus
    • All meals throughout the program period
    • Daily transportation between campus, hotel, and activity sites

While DASIE is not a for-credit course or a research position, it offers an enrichment experience focused on exposure to scientific uses of data, opportunities for mentoring, and guidance for thinking about next steps — whether academic, research-focused, or professional.

    Who Should Apply

DASIE is open to current undergraduate students and first-year master’s students from accredited U.S. institutions. There is no minimum GPA requirement, and the program does not restrict citizenship — students on valid study visas may apply, though they must maintain their eligibility and documentation independently.

The experience is especially relevant for students in STEM majors, including biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, engineering, and related fields, who want to learn how data analytics informs scientific work and research.

Beyond academic background, strong applicants will be curious about data in science, eager to engage with mentors and peers, and ready to explore how data skills can enhance their future career or educational trajectory.

Application Timeline & How to Apply

Interested candidates should prepare their applications carefully, as DASIE is competitive and designed for motivated students who want to deepen their understanding of data in science.

    Final deadline: March 13, 2026
    Program dates: May 12–20, 2026

Send completed applications with required materials (including recommendation letters for shortlisted applicants) to the program as indicated on the official page.
