The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders–Kenya (Defenders Coalition) has announced a call for participants for its 2026 Human Rights Defenders Academy Continuous Learning Track (CLT), a year-long leadership, mentorship, and capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen the skills and resilience of human rights defenders across Kenya.
The opportunity is open to passionate and committed defenders working in diverse fields of human rights advocacy and community development. Applications are being accepted until June 19, 2026.
Established in 2007 and registered under Kenyan law as a trust, the Defenders Coalition serves as a national membership organization dedicated to promoting the safety, security, and wellbeing of human rights defenders (HRDs) throughout Kenya.

The Human Rights Defenders Academy was first established in 2016 as a structured platform designed by and for human rights defenders. The academy aims to strengthen leadership skills, enhance collective action, and build stronger networks among defenders working across Kenya.
For 2026, the Defenders Coalition is introducing the Continuous Learning Track (CLT) Model, an expanded learning framework that combines leadership development, mentorship, practical training, and networking opportunities over several months.
The program will run from July to November 2026, utilizing both physical and hybrid learning approaches. The learning journey will culminate in the 11th Annual Human Rights Defenders Academy in November 2026, where participants will graduate and consolidate their learning experiences.
The program welcomes applications from human rights defenders actively engaged in promoting justice, accountability, and community empowerment.
