    HCWH Europe is a renowned international non-profit NGO dedicated to promoting sustainable healthcare practices. With its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, and a remote workforce across six European countries, HCWH Europe is part of the global HCWH network with offices in the US and Asia.

    The organization works closely with hospitals, healthcare providers, governments, NGOs, and international agencies to reduce healthcare’s environmental impact and foster sustainable development.

    The organization boasts over 240 institutional members, representing more than 8,400 healthcare facilities across 28 countries within the WHO Europe region. Its membership includes hospitals, health systems, and professionals committed to environmental sustainability. HCWH Europe is also part of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network, the world’s largest sustainable healthcare network.

    The organization’s strategic vision for 2026-2030 focuses on expanding membership, advancing sustainability initiatives, and fostering innovation in healthcare practices aligned with environmental goals.


    Position Overview

    The Board of Directors provides strategic leadership and governance oversight. While the day-to-day operations are managed by the Executive Director and the Leadership Team, the Board has ultimate authority over the organization’s mission, strategic direction, financial oversight, and legal responsibilities.

    The upcoming recruitment aims to replace experienced members who have completed their terms. This is a significant opportunity for individuals with leadership experience, a passion for sustainability, and an interest in shaping healthcare’s future in Europe.

    Key Responsibilities

    Leadership & Governance

    • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and ensure alignment with HCWH Europe’s mission, vision, and values.
    • Support the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic long-term goals.
    • Oversee the delivery of the annual Operational Plan, ensuring organizational objectives are met.

    • Review and approve the annual budget, financial statements, and audit reports.
    • Present the annual accounts and operating budget at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for member approval.
    • Participate actively in fundraising efforts, helping to identify new funding opportunities and making introductions to potential funders.

    • Assist in recruiting new Board members, ensuring a diverse and effective governance structure.
    • Represent HCWH Europe externally at events, conferences, and stakeholder engagements, acting as an ambassador for the organization.

    Meetings & Committees

    • Attend quarterly Board meetings held virtually, with one in-person meeting annually.
    • Contribute to sub-committees or task forces based on individual expertise.
    • Review agenda materials thoroughly prior to meetings.
    • Disclose any conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality regarding internal matters.

    Legal & Fiduciary Responsibilities

    • Ensure compliance with Belgian law governing non-profit organizations.
    • Manage risks and ensure organizational sustainability.
    • Uphold legal responsibilities, including overseeing financial management, legal compliance, and organizational integrity.
    • Participate in the “Alarm Bell” procedure if the organization faces serious threats to its sustainability.

    Qualifications & Experience

    Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

    • Significant leadership experience in healthcare, business, government, philanthropy, or non-profit sectors.
    • A strong commitment to healthcare beneficiaries and sustainability.

    • Diplomatic skills and the ability to engage and build consensus among diverse groups.
    • Integrity, credibility, and a passion for HCWH Europe’s mission.

    Skills & Expertise Areas

    The organization is particularly interested in applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

    1. HCWH Europe Membership & Leadership

    • Experience with healthcare sustainability initiatives.
    • Engagement with HCWH Europe or GGHH networks.
    • Proven ability to develop and implement sustainability strategies.

    2. Clinical Experience

    • Healthcare professionals from all disciplines.
    • Ability to communicate sustainability concepts to clinical audiences.
    • Passion for involving clinicians in environmental health initiatives.

    3. Philanthropic Giving & Fundraising

    • Experience in securing private sector funding or philanthropic donations.
    • Established networks within the European philanthropic community.
    • Skills in developing funding strategies and diversifying income streams.

    Legal & Ethical Responsibilities

    As a Board member, individuals will be registered with the Belgian UBO registry and are responsible for:

    • Managing financial oversight and ensuring accountability.
    • Preparing and approving annual reports and budgets.

    • Ensuring statutory compliance and organizational continuity.
    • Participating in decision-making processes related to organizational strategy and risk management.

    Board members will be indemnified under HCWH Europe’s Directors and Officers (D&O) insurance policy.

    Composition & Structure

    The Board must have a minimum of four Directors, including roles such as:

    • Chairperson
    • Vice-Chairperson
    • Secretary
    • Treasurer

    Each role carries specific responsibilities related to governance, financial oversight, and organizational leadership.
