The University of Oxford has opened applications for the prestigious Gerald Averay Wainwright Early Career Research Fellowship in Near Eastern Archaeology, offering a major opportunity for emerging postdoctoral researchers specializing in the archaeology of the Middle East, North Africa, and surrounding regions.
Hosted by the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, the fellowship supports innovative archaeological research focused on non-classical periods and societies across a broad geographical area stretching from North Africa to Central and Western Asia.
The full-time fellowship is fixed-term for 12 months beginning 1 September 2026 and offers a competitive salary ranging from £39,424 to £47,779 per annum.
The fellowship is designed for scholars conducting archaeological research rather than literary or philological studies. Eligible projects may focus on any period of human history outside Classical Antiquity, including:
Research may cover countries including:
Priority consideration will be given to projects focused on Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Turkey.

Applicants must demonstrate:
Candidates should have completed their doctorate no earlier than 1 January 2023, excluding approved career breaks.
One distinctive feature of the fellowship is its flexible hosting model. Research can be conducted at any UK university with suitable supervision arrangements in place. However, applicants choosing a host institution outside Oxford must already possess the legal right to work in the United Kingdom due to immigration restrictions.
This arrangement allows fellows to collaborate with specialist supervisors and institutions best suited to their research focus while remaining connected to Oxford’s internationally renowned academic environment.
Applications for the Gerald Averay Wainwright Early Career Research Fellowship close at 12:00 noon (UK time) on 1 July 2026.
Interviews are expected to take place during the week beginning 29 July 2026.
Interested candidates are encouraged to prepare a strong research proposal highlighting originality, publication potential, and broader academic or public impact.
The fellowship reflects growing global interest in preserving and understanding the archaeological heritage of regions deeply connected to human civilization, trade, migration, religion, and cultural exchange. By supporting early career scholars, the programme helps strengthen future leadership in Near Eastern and North African archaeology.
The opportunity also provides researchers with access to the rich interdisciplinary networks, libraries, and research ecosystems associated with the University of Oxford, one of the world’s leading centres for archaeological and historical scholarship.
For emerging researchers seeking to advance publishable work, develop grant proposals, and deepen international collaborations, this fellowship represents a significant academic career opportunity.
