Overview

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) is offering a one-year full-time Communications Intern position in Johannesburg, South Africa. This role provides hands-on experience in advocacy communications within a leading social and economic justice organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft engaging social media copy for platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
• Create draft visuals using IEJ templates and tools such as Canva
• Assist with scheduling and publishing posts aligned with campaigns and organisational priorities
• Maintain and update the IEJ newsletter mailing list
• Upload content and make basic updates to the IEJ website
• Apply IEJ branding and templates to presentations, reports, and other materials
• Support basic video editing for social media content (where applicable)
• Provide communications support to the Advocacy and Communications Manager and Senior Communications Officer
• Assist with administrative and coordination tasks related to communications outputs

Requirements

• A completed or in-progress qualification in communications, journalism, media studies, design, social sciences, or a related field
• Strong written communication skills
• Basic design skills and familiarity with Canva
• Familiarity with major social media platforms
• Basic video editing skills for short-form content (useful but not mandatory)
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
• Fluency in English
• Demonstrated interest in economic justice and progressive policy debates
