Overview
The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) is offering a one-year full-time Communications Intern position in Johannesburg, South Africa. This role provides hands-on experience in advocacy communications within a leading social and economic justice organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft engaging social media copy for platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- Create draft visuals using IEJ templates and tools such as Canva
- Assist with scheduling and publishing posts aligned with campaigns and organisational priorities
- Maintain and update the IEJ newsletter mailing list
- Upload content and make basic updates to the IEJ website
- Apply IEJ branding and templates to presentations, reports, and other materials
- Support basic video editing for social media content (where applicable)
- Provide communications support to the Advocacy and Communications Manager and Senior Communications Officer
- Assist with administrative and coordination tasks related to communications outputs
Requirements
- A completed or in-progress qualification in communications, journalism, media studies, design, social sciences, or a related field
- Strong written communication skills
- Basic design skills and familiarity with Canva
- Familiarity with major social media platforms
- Basic video editing skills for short-form content (useful but not mandatory)
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Fluency in English
- Demonstrated interest in economic justice and progressive policy debates
