United Nations (UN) Food Systems Coordination Hub has officially opened applications for the 2026 edition of the Food Systems Youth Leadership Programme (YLP), inviting young changemakers from around the world to join a growing network of emerging leaders working to transform global food systems.
Following the success of its inaugural cohort, the programme is expanding its international reach to support youth leaders engaged in policy, science, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and grassroots community action aimed at advancing sustainable and resilient food systems.

The UN Food Systems Coordination Hub says the programme represents a unique opportunity for young leaders to gain global exposure, strengthen leadership capacity, and contribute to international efforts focused on food systems transformation and sustainable development.
The expansion of the Youth Leadership Programme comes at a critical moment as countries worldwide face increasing pressure from climate change, rising food insecurity, unemployment, and inequality within agricultural systems. Analysts believe the programme reflects a growing recognition within international development circles that young people are no longer just beneficiaries of policy decisions, but essential drivers of innovation and transformation in food systems governance.
Experts note that Africa, Asia, and Latin America have some of the world’s youngest populations, making youth-led participation crucial for achieving long-term sustainability goals. Programmes such as the YLP are increasingly viewed as strategic investments in future leadership, especially as governments and international organisations seek locally driven solutions to food production, distribution, nutrition, and climate resilience challenges.
Key insights emerging from the programme include:
Development observers also point out that initiatives like the YLP help bridge the gap between grassroots activism and institutional decision-making, enabling young leaders to transform local experiences into scalable policy solutions with global impact.
