The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Belgium has announced a new opportunity for aspiring global health researchers, recruiting a Junior Researcher in Tuberculosis to support major international research projects across Africa.
The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp is inviting applications for a Junior Researcher in Tuberculosis (TB) within its Department of Clinical Sciences. The position offers early-career researchers the opportunity to contribute to two large international research consortia focused on improving tuberculosis diagnosis and integrated healthcare delivery in Africa.
Applications are open until 6 September 2026, with the successful candidate expected to begin as soon as possible.
The role will support the implementation and coordination of two internationally funded projects: ACT4KIDS-TB, which focuses on paediatric tuberculosis diagnostics in South Africa, Kenya, and Benin, and ComBaScale, a Horizon Europe project expanding integrated cardiovascular disease, HIV, and tuberculosis care in Lesotho.
Based in Antwerp, Belgium, the successful applicant will work closely with international research partners while travelling regularly to participating countries to monitor project implementation and strengthen collaboration.
ITM said the Junior Researcher will play an important role in coordinating research activities across multiple countries, ensuring projects remain on schedule while supporting scientific collaboration and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities include coordinating consortium meetings, monitoring project milestones, tracking deliverables, preparing reports for international funders, and supporting communication between research partners.
The successful candidate will also assist with ethical and regulatory submissions, including protocol amendments, ethics committee correspondence, informed consent documentation, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.
Additional duties include supporting advisory board meetings, coordinating with work package leaders, monitoring study implementation, and contributing to future grant applications for major international research funding programmes such as Horizon Europe, EDCTP, ERC, and FWO.
For the ACT4KIDS-TB project, the researcher will work with institutions in Benin and South Africa, while the ComBaScale project will involve collaboration with partners in Lesotho, including support for postgraduate capacity-building initiatives involving master’s and PhD students.
The Institute is particularly interested in candidates who wish to pursue a tuberculosis-related PhD based on research embedded within the projects they will help coordinate.
Applicants should hold a master’s degree in medicine, nursing, laboratory sciences, public health, or a related discipline. While a paediatric background is considered an advantage, it is not a requirement.
Candidates with experience working on international or multi-country research projects, particularly in resource-limited settings, will be viewed favourably. Knowledge of tuberculosis research, research project management, electronic data management systems such as REDCap, and clinical trial monitoring will also be beneficial.
The institute is seeking applicants with excellent organisational, communication, and intercultural collaboration skills, together with strong English language proficiency. Knowledge of French is considered an asset, although candidates willing to learn quickly are also encouraged to apply.
The position requires flexibility and the willingness to undertake short international trips of up to two weeks to South Africa, Benin, and Lesotho as project activities require.
The full-time position is initially offered on a one-year contract, with funding already secured for four years and the intention to extend the appointment.
ITM noted that part-time arrangements, including 0.8 full-time equivalent (FTE) schedules, may also be considered, particularly for candidates with ongoing clinical responsibilities.
The position offers a minimum gross monthly salary of €4,107.29, with final remuneration determined according to relevant professional experience under the institute’s Hay grading system.
Employees will also receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes meal vouchers, public transport or bicycle allowances, supplementary pension contributions, and opportunities for hybrid working.
Founded in 1906, the Institute of Tropical Medicine is internationally recognised for research, education, and clinical expertise in public health, infectious diseases, and global health. Its work focuses on disease prevention, outbreak response, equitable health systems, and antimicrobial resistance.
The Junior Researcher role offers an opportunity for emerging scientists to contribute to internationally significant tuberculosis research while gaining practical experience in project coordination, global partnerships, and implementation science.
Interested applicants must submit a CV and motivation letter through the Institute of Tropical Medicine’s online application system before 6 September 2026.
The opportunity is expected to appeal to researchers seeking an international career at the intersection of infectious disease research, public health, and global health collaboration.
