The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with support from the Government of Germany, has launched a new funding opportunity under the Supporting AFR100 Program. The initiative aims to strengthen locally led forest and landscape restoration efforts across selected African countries by providing financial support to eligible organizations working to restore degraded ecosystems and improve community livelihoods.
Through the Direct Beneficiary Grants (DBG) scheme, registered local organizations can access funding ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 50,000 to implement practical restoration projects that contribute to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and economic development.
The Supporting AFR100 Program is designed to advance the goals of the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100), a continent-wide effort focused on restoring degraded landscapes and promoting sustainable land management.
Implemented by FAO, the program currently operates in:
The program seeks to empower local organizations and communities to lead restoration activities while strengthening livelihoods and enhancing ecosystem services.
The Direct Beneficiary Grants mechanism provides financial assistance to local organizations that are actively involved in restoration initiatives and sustainable land-use practices.
Eligible projects may receive grants between USD 5,000 and USD 50,000, awarded in local currency. Funding is intended to support on-the-ground activities that contribute to landscape restoration, biodiversity conservation, and community resilience.
Priority activities include:
The funding is expected to help organizations scale their impact while creating environmental and economic benefits for local communities.
While the broader Supporting AFR100 Program operates in six African countries, the current Direct Beneficiary Grants call is only open to organizations operating within designated program landscapes in four countries:
Organizations based outside these eligible countries will not be considered under this funding round.
The grants are intended to support organizations that are actively contributing to the restoration of degraded lands and the development of sustainable livelihoods.
Key objectives include:
By investing directly in local organizations, the program seeks to ensure that restoration efforts are community-driven and capable of delivering long-term environmental and social benefits.
The call is specifically designed for registered local organizations with relevant experience in restoration and sustainable land management activities.
To qualify, applicants must:
Prospective applicants are encouraged to carefully review the official guidelines before beginning the application process.
Forest and landscape restoration plays a critical role in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and rural poverty. Across Africa, local organizations are often at the forefront of restoration efforts but face significant resource constraints.
The AFR100 Direct Beneficiary Grants provide an opportunity for community-based organizations, civil society groups, and local restoration actors to access financial support needed to expand their work and create lasting environmental impact.
The initiative also aligns with broader sustainable development goals by promoting ecosystem restoration, strengthening climate resilience, and supporting inclusive economic growth.
Organizations interested in applying should take note of the following key dates:
Applicants are encouraged to begin preparing their proposals early to ensure compliance with all requirements and submission guidelines.
The Supporting AFR100 Program represents a significant investment in locally led environmental action across Africa. By funding practical restoration initiatives and livelihood-focused interventions, the program aims to create healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and more sustainable economies.
As restoration continues to gain momentum across the continent, the Direct Beneficiary Grants offer an important opportunity for eligible organizations to contribute to landscape recovery while improving the lives of people who depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.
