The Innovative PhD Opportunity 2026 at the University of Groningen offers a unique research position for individuals passionate about youth participation, climate-responsive cities, and the ethical integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in urban design.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting a systematic literature review on AI in participatory planning
- Carrying out qualitative and ethnographic fieldwork in urban environments
- Engaging with policymakers, practitioners, AI developers, and community stakeholders
- Designing and facilitating co-design workshops involving youth and AI tools
- Analyzing ethical, cultural, and institutional dimensions of AI integration
- Disseminating research findings through publications and conferences
- Contributing to teaching activities (approximately 15% of time)
Requirements
- A Master’s degree in urban planning, human geography, urban studies, anthropology, or related fields
- Experience with qualitative research methods such as ethnography, interviews, or focus groups
- Strong communication skills and cultural sensitivity
- Excellent command of English
- Additional experience in participatory design, digital tools, or AI ethics is an advantage
Benefits
- Monthly salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881
- Full-time employment for four years (subject to performance evaluation after the first year)
