Overview

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking an innovative and highly motivated Consultant to support the Water and Soil Accelerator (WASA) Agribusiness Catalyst initiative.

The role involves providing investment advisory services to accelerate scaling of sustainable water and soil management solutions in rainfed agricultural systems across Zambia and Malawi.

The project aims to improve market access, facilitate last-mile delivery of climate-smart technologies, develop inclusive financing mechanisms, mobilize private-sector investment, and reach 50,000 farmers across 50,000 hectares.

Job Description

Objectives of the Assignment

The consultant will provide transaction support to prepare five selected agribusiness models for investment, enhance their financial and commercial structuring, and facilitate private-sector co-investment.

The role includes strengthening investor engagement, building institutional capacity, and supporting the scaling of climate-smart agricultural solutions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Inception Report and Workplan
  Review agribusiness models and program documentation; develop a detailed approach, methodology, and workplan.
• Institutional Pitch Kits
  Assess commercial viability; develop investor-ready business cases, financial models, and financing structures; prepare professional investment materials.

• Capacity Building
  Design and deliver training on investment readiness, financial management, governance, and inclusive financing; document outcomes and provide recommendations.
• Investor Engagement and Capital Mobilization
  Identify and engage relevant investors; facilitate outreach, negotiations, and partnerships; support mobilization of USD 500,000 private-sector investment; track and report progress.

Candidate Requirements

Educational Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Development Finance, or related fields.
• Professional certification (e.g., CFA, ACCA, FMVA) is preferred.

Experience

• 8-10+ years in investment advisory, transaction structuring, development finance, or private sector investment mobilization.
• Proven success in mobilizing private capital, co-investments, and structuring inclusive financing mechanisms.
• Experience working with agribusinesses, SMEs, or agricultural value chains, particularly in climate-smart or sustainable resource management.

• Prior work in Zambia, Malawi, or similar East and Southern African markets.
• Experience supporting enterprises through investment readiness, due diligence, and negotiations.
• Skills in capacity building on financial and investment topics.

Skills and Knowledge

• Deep understanding of the capital landscape relevant to agri-food and development finance.
• Strong financial modelling and deal structuring skills.
• Established relationships within the investor and financing ecosystem.

• Knowledge of regulatory, currency, and country risk factors.
• Excellent negotiation, facilitation, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and produce credible documentation.
