What Will Fellows Actually Do?

• Meet virtually once a month throughout the six-month program

Who Should Apply?

This fellowship is designed for people already engaged in the study of Russia and/or the broader Eurasia region who want to strengthen their skills, professional network, and body of research. Desired qualifications include:

• Several years of experience working on, studying, or otherwise examining Russia and/or broader Eurasia
• A good working knowledge of English, since the fellowship is conducted entirely in this language (publications will initially appear in English, with possible future translation into regional languages)

What Is the Fellowship Trying to Achieve?

• Facilitate first-rate research and writing in the field of Russian studies, especially work with policy relevance — with active support in reaching a wider public and the Washington policy community
• Foster a lasting network — fellows get to know one another during the program, and those ties continue after the fellowship ends, feeding into an active alumni community that future fellows can also draw on

How Many Fellowships Are Available?

10 Digital Fellowships will be awarded per year, with at least 4 positions specifically reserved for researchers pursuing topics in the natural sciences, medicine, technology, or related fields a notable emphasis on interdisciplinary participation beyond traditional humanities and policy research.

Programme Dates and Duration

The inaugural Digital Fellowship program runs from October 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, potentially followed by further integration into the Kennan Institute’s broader event schedule.

What Do Fellows Receive?

• A monthly stipend of $2,000 to support research and participation

What’s not included: Since the program is entirely virtual, the Kennan Institute does not cover travel-related expenses, including visas.
