Students passionate about climate action and environmental justice now have an opportunity to gain practical experience while receiving financial support through the Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) Climate Action Fellowship at San Francisco State University. The fellowship offers three funded positions for the 2026–2027 academic year, providing selected fellows with the opportunity to work on community-based climate initiatives, environmental restoration, and sustainability education.

The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who want to develop professional skills, contribute to meaningful climate solutions, and collaborate with experienced faculty mentors and community organizations. Fellows will receive a stipend of $10,000 for the academic year while dedicating approximately 15 hours per week to fellowship activities.

About the LEJ Climate Action Fellowship

The Climate Action Fellowship is coordinated through Climate HQ at San Francisco State University in partnership with Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ). The initiative combines academic learning with practical environmental engagement, allowing students to address real-world climate challenges while building valuable career experience.

Throughout the fellowship period, participants will work closely with faculty mentors, environmental practitioners, and community organizations committed to advancing environmental justice across the San Francisco Bay Area.

The fellowship runs from Fall 2026 through Spring 2027 and requires in-person participation.

Fellowship Requirements

• Register for the one-unit seminar Climate Action: Applied Learning for Real World Change (BIOL 681) during Fall 2026.
• Attend the fellowship orientation program.
• Participate in approximately monthly meetings with faculty mentors, program coordinators, and fellow participants.
• Meet regularly with assigned faculty mentors.
• Present fellowship work during a campus Earth Week event, such as through poster presentations.
• Submit a short final project report at the conclusion of the fellowship.
• Participate fully in person, as remote participation is not available.

Available Fellowship Positions

The program currently offers two LEJ Partnership Fellowship positions, where fellows will support community-based environmental projects led by Literacy for Environmental Justice.

Primary responsibilities may include:

• Supporting native plant nursery restoration initiatives.
• Assisting with environmental education programs for community college students.
• Introducing participants to the ecological importance of the San Francisco Bay.
• Developing virtual field trips and interactive story maps highlighting Heron’s Head Park and Bay kayaking experiences.
• Helping connect community members with oyster restoration projects.
• Participating in structured environmental restoration activities under LEJ supervision.

These projects allow fellows to gain practical conservation experience while supporting environmental resilience and climate justice efforts.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should demonstrate both academic commitment and enthusiasm for climate action.

Eligible candidates must:

• Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program during Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
• Have reliable transportation to Heron’s Head Park and LEJ’s nursery in the Bayview District.
• Demonstrate curiosity and a genuine commitment to climate change solutions.
• Possess dependable work habits.
• Have strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.

Previous environmental experience is beneficial but not mandatory if applicants demonstrate strong motivation and transferable skills.
