    2025 Winners Demonstrate Diverse Approaches to Social Change

    The most recent recipients of the Äänit Prize showcased innovative responses to challenges in education, climate resilience, and youth employment.

    The 2025 winners included:

    • Sunday Ochai, awarded $60,000 for advancing education opportunities among conflict-affected children in Nigeria
    • Fama Jallow, awarded $19,000 for developing climate intelligence tools for farmers and vulnerable communities
    • Kenechukwu Ikebuaku, awarded $19,000 for addressing youth unemployment through skills development and apprenticeship programmes

    The projects were recognised for their potential to improve livelihoods, strengthen resilience, and create sustainable development outcomes.

    Eligibility Requirements for Applicants

    The prize is open exclusively to members of the Mandela Rhodes and Rhodes Scholar alumni communities.

    Applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be a Mandela Rhodes alumnus from 2005 onwards or a Rhodes Scholar alumnus from 2005 onwards
    • Be a founder, co-founder, or member of the executive leadership team
    • Demonstrate current or potential impact within one of the designated impact areas
    • Operate either a nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid initiative
    • Commit to remaining actively involved with the project for at least two years following receipt of the award

    The foundation emphasised that initiatives at various stages of development are welcome to apply.

    Multi-Stage Selection Process Designed to Identify High-Potential Ventures

    The 2026 Äänit Prize will be awarded through a competitive six-stage process.

    Step 1: Expression of Interest

    • Applications open: 20 May 2026
    • Deadline: 17 June 2026

    Applicants submit a short motivation outlining the social impact of their project and their plans for implementation.

    Step 2: Invitation to Submit Full Application

    Shortlisted candidates will be invited to continue to the next phase.

    Step 3: Full Application Submission

    • Opens: 1 July 2026
    • Closes: 21 July 2026

    Applicants will submit:

    • Written project statement
    • Business or project plan (maximum 12 pages)
    • Supporting documentation

    Step 4: Interviews and Pitch Presentations

    Longlisted candidates will participate in interviews during the week of 17 August 2026.

    Step 5: Proposal Refinement

    Finalists will receive feedback and be given 48 hours to improve their submissions and record a two-minute pitch.

    Step 6: Final Judging and Award Announcement

    An independent judging panel will determine the winners and allocate funding.

    The winners will be announced publicly on 18 September 2026.
