The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) has officially opened applications for one or two fully funded PhD scholarships at its Department of Political Science and Public Management for the 2026 academic year.
The prestigious doctoral opportunities are available across several key research areas, including political science, public administration, welfare studies, international and regional politics, and journalism studies.
Successful candidates are expected to begin their studies on November 1, 2026, or on another agreed-upon date. The PhD positions will be based across SDU campuses located in Odense, Esbjerg, and Sønderborg in Denmark.
The Department of Political Science and Public Management at SDU is recognized for its interdisciplinary research and strong international academic networks. PhD candidates will join one of the department’s three major research sections:
The Public Administration, Welfare and Politics section focuses on comparative welfare studies, social policy, political economy, comparative politics, and public management research. Meanwhile, the International and Regional Politics section includes prominent centers such as the Center for War Studies, the Centre for Border Region Studies, and the Danish Centre for Rural Research. Research within this section explores contemporary security issues, peace and conflict studies, border regions, and rural development.
The Journalism research section centers on rhetoric, journalistic language, and the societal and political dimensions of journalism through collaborative research networks.
According to the university, all three sections contribute extensively to research-based teaching, doctoral supervision, and stakeholder engagement while fostering strong academic communities for emerging scholars.
The PhD scholarships are open to applicants with strong academic backgrounds and original research ideas aligned with the department’s research profile. Priority will be given to candidates from fields such as:
Applicants are expected to submit an individual PhD project proposal demonstrating a coherent research design, familiarity with existing scholarship, and relevance to one of the department’s research areas.
SDU noted that ideal candidates should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, independent research skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and a willingness to engage actively with national and international research communities through conferences, collaborations, and academic dissemination.
The university also encourages candidates to participate in grant applications and contribute to the department’s academic and social environment.
Selected candidates will follow an individualized PhD plan that includes coursework, conference participation, teaching responsibilities, and research activities. Most PhD students are also expected to spend a semester abroad at another research institution.
The scholarship package includes:
Employment conditions will follow Danish government agreements for academic staff.
Applicants may apply under either the 5+3 PhD program or the 4+4 PhD program.
The 5+3 scheme is a fully salaried three-year doctoral program designed for applicants who already hold a master’s degree equivalent to 120 ECTS credits.
The 4+4 scheme spans four years and is open to students who have not yet completed a master’s degree but will have completed at least 60 ECTS credits in their master’s studies by February 1, 2027. Under this model, students complete their master’s degree alongside their PhD enrollment before transitioning into a fully salaried PhD fellowship.
Applicants must submit a comprehensive application package that includes:
Importantly, SDU emphasized that project proposals must remain anonymous and should not contain identifying information.
All non-Danish documents must also be translated into English before submission.
Shortlisted candidates will undergo evaluation by an internal assessment committee. Qualified applicants may then be invited for interviews organized by the department’s appointment committee.
The university stated that incomplete applications or submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.
SDU also highlighted its commitment to diversity and equal opportunity, encouraging applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
The deadline to apply for the SDU PhD scholarships is June 8, 2026, at 11:59 PM (CET/CEST).
Interested candidates are required to submit applications electronically through the official SDU application portal.
