As AI systems continue to shape governments, corporations, workplaces, and everyday life, the need for rigorous, human‑centered reporting has never been more urgent.

This Fellowship empowers journalists to pursue ambitious, high‑impact investigations into how AI systems are designed, deployed, and governed—especially in communities where oversight is weak and harms are often overlooked.

About the AI Accountability Fellowships

Launched in 2022, the AI Accountability Fellowships have become a cornerstone of global AI journalism. Over four years, the program has supported 35 journalists across five continents, enabling groundbreaking investigations that have influenced legislation, informed lawsuits, and sparked civic engagement.

The 2026–2027 cohort will continue this mission by supporting 8–10 journalists worldwide who are committed to uncovering the human, social, political, and economic implications of AI systems.

What the Fellowship Offers

Selected Fellows receive up to $25,000 in total support:

2. Up to $5,000 for engagement activities

   • Public events
   • Partnerships with creators
   • Zines, workshops, or local dissemination

3. Mentorship and Training
   • Access to experts across AI, policy, data, and investigative journalism
   • Monthly virtual training sessions
   • Peer learning with a global cohort
4. A Collaborative Global Community
   • Monthly 1.5–2 hour mandatory meetings
   • Participation in community calls
   • Engagement on the Fellowship’s online platform
5. Impact‑Driven Storytelling Support For the first time, Fellows will receive structured guidance to design and execute an impact plan—ensuring their reporting reaches the audiences who can act on it.

Previous Fellows have produced influential reporting on:

• Data labelers unknowingly working for military projects
• Big Tech’s strategies for global data center expansion
• Algorithmic flaws in Peru’s poverty‑targeting system
• Export of facial recognition tools to countries with weak regulations
• AI‑driven welfare fraud detection in Europe

These stories have led to:

• New legislation in Brazil
• Evidence used in legal cases
• Student‑led investigations in Indonesia
• Creative civic engagement, including poetry and community storytelling

Fellowship Requirements

To maintain a strong, collaborative learning environment, Fellows must:

• Attend monthly mandatory meetings (1.5–2 hours)
• Join at least one community call
• Participate actively in virtual discussions
• Share methodologies and lessons learned
• Engage in peer review and collaborative learning

If a journalist has a strong story but cannot commit to these requirements, the Pulitzer Center recommends applying for an AI Reporting Grant instead.
