About the Role
As aQA Automation Engineer, you will take ownership of quality across a mature, multi-repository digital health platform, building and maintaining a robust automation framework while improving test coverage and overall platform reliability.
Working closely with a small engineering team, you'll collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements, define and document expected system behaviour, and translate those into effective automated tests.
This is a highly hands-on, autonomous role where you'll play a key part in enhancing software quality, enabling faster and more reliable releases, and ensuring the platform delivers a seamless experience for clients, end users, and internal teams.
Responsibilities
- Take end-to-end ownership of the quality assurance process, designing and developing the automated testing framework.
- Understand how a large, multi-repo system works and how it should work from client, end-user and internal operations perspectives.
- Ask the right questions and document expected behaviour where inherited documentation is partly out of date.
- Author English-readable scenarios in Cucumber and Gherkin.
- Build automation in JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Drive the UI through a page object model.
- Add data-test-ids to React code where missing.
- Validate correct database state using SQL.
- Maintain the automated tests as new features arrive.
- Feed into requirements upfront as new features are planned.
- Flag compliance, regulatory and security implications.
- Run exploratory testing to identify where the product behaves incorrectly.
- Improve reliability and enable faster, safer releases through automation.
- Reproduce multi-step defects precisely and identify edge cases.
- Build a repeatable, documented QA process from an unreliable baseline.
- Work out how the system should behave across multiple user perspectives and how it might break.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience in QA or test automation, hands-on with TypeScript or JavaScript.
- 4+ years of hands-on test automation coding in TypeScript or JavaScript.
- 2+ years of BDD test authoring with Cucumber and Gherkin.
- 3+ years of web UI test automation using a page object model, preferably with Playwright.
- 2+ years of end-to-end QA ownership, including defining, documenting, building and maintaining tests.
- 3+ years of requirements analysis and stakeholder communication.
- 2+ years of SQL querying to validate database state, using MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- 3+ years of exploratory testing and precise multi-step defect reproduction.
- Ability to drive automation and own the build with limited direction.
- Strong detail orientation, including the ability to spot edge cases and gaps in specifications.
- Hands-on JavaScript or TypeScript automation coding is non-negotiable; willingness to learn is not sufficient.
Nice to Have
- Mobile app testing and automation experience, especially with Flutter apps.
- Experience with Appium or Flutter integration_test.
- Experience reading and working with React front-end code.
- Experience with Angular, Vue or another modern JavaScript framework.
- Security and regulatory awareness, including ISO 27001, GDPR or NHS DTAC.
- Experience in another regulated or audited environment.
- ISO 13485 medical-device regulated-environment testing.
- Experience in an adjacent regulated domain such as medtech, fintech or NHS/DTAC.
- Healthtech or digital health domain experience.
- Comfort using AI in the engineering workflow.
