Candidates are expected to apply through the region where they live or have received a significant portion of their education.

The KwaZulu-Natal committee selects one scholar annually and may forward additional finalists to the national selection stage. Other regional committees contribute candidates to the South Africa-at-Large final selection panel, which ultimately awards four scholarships.

Additional dedicated pools exist for specific schools and institutions, including the SACS Scholarship, Paul Roos Scholarship, Bishops Scholarship, and St Andrew’s Scholarship streams. These targeted categories aim to widen access and ensure representation from diverse educational backgrounds.

Applicants may apply to up to two eligible pools, depending on their academic or geographical eligibility, although candidates in the Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, and Eswatini (BLMNS) pool may apply only within that category.

Application timeline and process

The application window for the 2026 Rhodes Scholarship cycle opens on 1 June 2026 and closes on 3 August 2026. Supporting documents and references must be submitted by 17 August 2026.

Successful applicants will begin postgraduate study at Oxford in 2027.
