Applications for the highly prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for the Southern Africa constituency will officially open on 1 June 2026, offering fully funded postgraduate study opportunities at the University of Oxford for outstanding students across the region.
The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the world’s most competitive and historic international awards, designed to identify and support exceptional young leaders who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to public service. Successful candidates will begin their studies at Oxford in 2027.
The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support covering full tuition fees at the University of Oxford, an annual living stipend, and additional costs associated with studying abroad. These include the Oxford application fee, visa expenses, and the UK’s International Health Surcharge, which grants access to the National Health Service.
Scholars also receive two economy-class flights between their home country and the United Kingdom at the start and end of their studies. Beyond financial support, the programme offers structured assistance with university applications, course selection, and transition into academic life at Oxford.
Recipients are also integrated into the global Rhodes community—an international network of scholars, alumni, and fellows that continues beyond graduation.
The Rhodes Scholarship is merit-based and places strong emphasis not only on academic achievement but also on leadership outside the classroom. Applicants are expected to demonstrate excellence in fields such as sport, music, art, or debate, alongside strong ethical values.
Selection criteria highlight personal integrity, courage, dedication to service, and a demonstrated commitment to improving society. The scholarship aims to develop what the programme describes as “public-spirited leaders” capable of contributing to international understanding and peace.
Within Southern Africa, ten scholarships are awarded annually across multiple selection pools. Eligible applicants include citizens of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, and Eswatini.
South African applicants are divided into regional committees, including the Eastern Cape and Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng-Limpopo-Mpumalanga-North West, and the Western and Northern Cape. Candidates are expected to apply through the region where they live or have received a significant portion of their education.
The KwaZulu-Natal committee selects one scholar annually and may forward additional finalists to the national selection stage. Other regional committees contribute candidates to the South Africa-at-Large final selection panel, which ultimately awards four scholarships.
Additional dedicated pools exist for specific schools and institutions, including the SACS Scholarship, Paul Roos Scholarship, Bishops Scholarship, and St Andrew’s Scholarship streams. These targeted categories aim to widen access and ensure representation from diverse educational backgrounds.
Applicants may apply to up to two eligible pools, depending on their academic or geographical eligibility, although candidates in the Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, and Eswatini (BLMNS) pool may apply only within that category.
The application window for the 2026 Rhodes Scholarship cycle opens on 1 June 2026 and closes on 3 August 2026. Supporting documents and references must be submitted by 17 August 2026.
All applications are submitted online, with detailed guidance available through the official Southern Africa constituency information channels. Shortlisted candidates progress through multiple stages of regional and national selection interviews before final awards are announced.
Successful applicants will begin postgraduate study at Oxford in 2027.
Beyond academic funding, the Rhodes Scholarship is widely recognised as a leadership development programme that connects scholars into a lifelong global network. Alumni often go on to careers in public service, academia, law, business, and international development.
The scholarship continues to attract applicants from across Southern Africa who demonstrate not only intellectual ability but also a strong commitment to addressing societal challenges.
