Sidney Sussex College has officially opened applications for the inaugural Sandra Dawson Fellowship, a prestigious three-year opportunity designed to support exceptional early-to-mid-career academics across all fields of research and scholarship within the collegiate University of Cambridge.
The newly established fellowship honors Professor Dame Sandra Dawson, the first woman to serve as Master of Sidney Sussex College from 1999 to 2009. The initiative celebrates her outstanding contributions to higher education, leadership, organizational research, and gender inclusion in academia.
The Fellowship was announced as part of the College’s “Forward Together” celebrations, marking 50 years since women were first admitted to Sidney Sussex College. According to the College, the initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and the advancement of interdisciplinary academic excellence.
Applications are now open to exceptional scholars who either currently hold, or have been appointed to hold, an academic position within the collegiate University. Eligible candidates may include recently appointed University Teaching Officers, holders of personal research grants hosted in University departments, as well as existing Fellows, Bye-Fellows, and Research Associates associated with the College.
The Sandra Dawson Fellowship offers successful applicants a unique opportunity to pursue independent research while benefiting from the intellectual environment and scholarly community of Sidney Sussex College and the wider University of Cambridge ecosystem.
The Fellowship comes with a fixed, non-renewable tenure of three years. In addition to the usual privileges associated with Fellowship at the College, the selected Dawson Fellow will receive a dedicated annual Research Allowance of £5,000. This funding is provided in addition to the standard Academic Allowance currently valued at £1,500 per year.
College officials emphasized that the Fellowship is intended to nurture emerging academic talent while providing recipients with space and support to advance innovative research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Named in honor of Dame Sandra Dawson’s 80th birthday, the Fellowship also recognizes her pioneering legacy as one of Cambridge’s most influential academic leaders. During her distinguished career, Professor Dawson served as Dean of the Cambridge Judge Business School from 1995 to 2006 and later became one of the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellors between 2008 and 2012.
Her scholarship spans organizational behavior, leadership, and corporate governance, and she has long been regarded as an advocate for women’s leadership in academia and beyond. In 2004, she was appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in recognition of her services to higher education and management research.
Founded in 1596 by Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex, Sidney Sussex College remains one of the historic colleges of the University of Cambridge. The College is known for its close-knit academic community, interdisciplinary culture, and commitment to world-class teaching and research.
The College highlighted that Fellows and researchers benefit from a vibrant scholarly environment that includes lectures, seminars, concerts, collaborative initiatives, and public engagement activities throughout the academic year.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Martin Burton, Master of Sidney Sussex College, or Senior Tutor Mr Max Beber for informal discussions about the Fellowship and College environment before applying.
Applications for the Sandra Dawson Fellowship must be submitted via email by 11:59 PM on Sunday, 7 June 2026. Applicants are required to provide an application form, cover letter, personal statement, and contact details for two referees.
Sidney Sussex College noted that it actively supports equality, diversity, and inclusion and strongly encourages applications from scholars of all backgrounds.
The Fellowship represents a major new opportunity for rising academics seeking research support, interdisciplinary engagement, and career development within one of the world’s leading university communities.
