    Overview

    The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is offering a Summer High School Internship Program for 2026, providing students with hands-on experience in science and museum research. Interns will collaborate with scientists, curators, and educators on meaningful projects.

    Key Responsibilities

    Interns will engage in research projects, contribute to various museum departments, and participate in enrichment activities. Specific projects include:

    • Exhibits and Communications: Writing about the natural world, producing content for general audiences, interviewing scientists, and drafting exhibition labels.
    • Botany: Assisting researchers in determining geographic coordinates for plant specimens and supporting conservation research.
    • Anthropology: Restoring cultural heritage artifacts, specifically Tlingit bear screens.
    • Paleobiology: Studying microscopic fossils, assisting with laboratory preparation, microscope analysis, and fossil identification.
    • Science Education: Participating in public engagement and science communication projects.

    Requirements

    • Currently enrolled in high school (grades 9–12).
    • 15 to 18 years old at the start of the internship.
    • Fluent in English (writing and communication).
    • Located within commuting distance of Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia.
    • Able to participate in the full 8-week program.
