The programme aims to strengthen Botswana’s higher education and research institutions by enabling university faculty, technical instructors, administrators, and researchers to undertake advanced academic research or develop innovative curricula at U.S. universities and research institutions.

Applications must be submitted online by Sunday, 26 July 2027.

Programme Focuses on Capacity Building in Priority Sectors

The Fulbright African Research Scholar Program is designed to enhance institutional capacity by equipping scholars with advanced knowledge, research skills, and international collaboration opportunities that can be transferred to their home institutions upon completion of the award.

For the 2027–28 competition, preference will be given to proposals addressing strategic priority areas, including:

    • Trade and investment to promote economic growth and shared prosperity.
    • Security and global health initiatives that strengthen resilience and public health systems.
    • Natural resource policy supporting sustainable resource management.

    Two Grant Categories Available

The Fulbright African Research Scholar Program offers two distinct funding opportunities.

    Research Grants

Research Grants provide awards lasting between three and nine months for university faculty, technical instructors, and research professionals to undertake academic research at U.S. institutions.

    To qualify, applicants must:

    • Hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree.
    • Demonstrate a strong scholarly record.
    • Have at least three years of university or technical teaching experience, preferably.
    • Conduct research that aligns with one or more programme priority areas.

The programme does not support postdoctoral research immediately following completion of a doctorate.

    Program and Curriculum Development Grants

These grants support academic staff and administrators seeking to strengthen teaching programmes and institutional curricula.

Awards range from three to five months and are intended for applicants who wish to:

    • Develop new academic programmes or curricula.
    • Enhance technical and vocational education.
    • Improve employability-focused learning in areas such as artificial intelligence, innovation, agriculture, solar energy, and textile production.

Unlike the Research Grant category, applicants are only required to possess a master’s degree or equivalent graduate qualification.

    Eligibility Requirements

The competition is open to scholars affiliated with eligible educational and research institutions across Botswana.

    Applicants must:

    • Be citizens or permanent residents of Botswana.
    • Hold a valid Botswana passport.
    • Be affiliated with a university, research institute, museum, technical education institution, college of arts, or similar organisation.
    • Demonstrate strong English language proficiency.
    • Be in good health.
    • Not be directly related to employees of the U.S. Embassy.

Preference will also be given to candidates who:

    • Have limited or no previous experience in the United States.
    • Have not received a Fulbright Scholar award within the last five years.
    • Have not previously participated in the Fulbright Scholar Programme.

Previous unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to reapply with updated proposals and supporting documentation.

    Comprehensive Grant Benefits

Selected scholars will receive a competitive package designed to support successful completion of their projects.

    Benefits include:

    • Round-trip international airfare.
    • Excess baggage allowance.
    • Health insurance.
    • Monthly living stipend.
    • Professional allowance for books, conferences, and seminars.

Laboratory fees may also be provided in exceptional circumstances where funding is available.

    Application Requirements

Applicants are required to complete the online application and submit all supporting documents before the deadline.

    Required documents include:

    • Detailed research proposal or curriculum development statement.
    • Comprehensive curriculum vitae.
    • Three letters of reference.
    • Preferred letter of invitation from a prospective U.S. host institution.

The U.S. Embassy strongly encourages applicants to identify and communicate with suitable U.S. universities before applying, as this increases the likelihood of successful placement.

Applicants requiring assistance identifying potential host institutions may contact the Fulbright Botswana programme for recommendations.

Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence Guidance

The U.S. Embassy has emphasized the importance of academic honesty throughout the application process.

Applications will undergo plagiarism screening, and any evidence of copied or improperly attributed material will result in immediate disqualification.

The programme also advises applicants to exercise caution when using generative artificial intelligence tools. Some U.S. universities have adopted policies regarding AI-generated application content, and directly copying AI-generated text into applications could negatively affect admission or affiliation decisions.

Applicants are therefore encouraged to submit original work that accurately reflects their own ideas, research, and academic writing.

    Application Deadline

Interested scholars must submit complete online applications no later than Sunday, 26 July 2027.

The Fulbright African Research Scholar Program remains one of the most prestigious international academic exchange opportunities available to scholars in Botswana, providing participants with world-class research experience while strengthening higher education, innovation, and institutional capacity across the country.
