Malteser International is currently recruiting for the position of WASH Technical Officer (National Position) to be based in Katsina State, Nigeria. The organization is the international humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta and has over 60 years of global experience in providing emergency relief and recovery support to communities affected by conflicts and disasters. With operations in more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, Malteser International delivers assistance guided by Christian values and core humanitarian principles, ensuring support is provided to people in need regardless of religion, origin, or political affiliation.

In Nigeria, Malteser International has been active since 2017, primarily supporting humanitarian interventions in Northeast Nigeria, particularly Borno State. Its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programmes aim to improve access to safe water, sanitation services, and hygiene promotion for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. These interventions include borehole rehabilitation and solarization, construction of latrines, distribution of non-food items (NFIs), and community hygiene awareness campaigns. The organization applies a participatory, gender-sensitive, and inclusive approach that integrates food security, nutrition, and livelihoods into its broader humanitarian programming.

For its Katsina operations, Malteser International is seeking a qualified and motivated WASH Technical Officer to support the implementation of its WASH projects at the field level. The selected officer will be responsible for ensuring that all WASH interventions are implemented in line with approved work plans, budgets, and organizational quality standards. The role will also involve contributing to monitoring and evaluation systems to measure project effectiveness and impact.

The WASH Technical Officer will provide technical oversight for the design, construction, and rehabilitation of key WASH infrastructure, including boreholes, latrines, and medical incinerators. He or she will support procurement processes by assisting in contractor selection, bid evaluations, due diligence, and contract documentation. In addition, the officer will prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQs), technical designs, and progress reports while ensuring that contractors comply with organizational standards and contractual obligations.

The position also requires close coordination with government agencies, WASH stakeholders, and community-based structures such as WASH Committees (WASHCOMs). Through this collaboration, the officer will ensure community participation, accountability, and compliance with humanitarian standards such as Sphere and WASH Cluster guidelines. Regular field monitoring, site inspections, and progress tracking will form a critical part of the role to ensure timely delivery of project outputs and efficient use of resources.

Furthermore, the officer will contribute to project documentation, including weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports, as well as lessons learned and success stories. The role integrates key humanitarian principles, including gender sensitivity, protection, accountability to affected populations, and community engagement. The successful candidate is expected to work in challenging and emergency-prone environments, often traveling to remote areas to ensure effective project delivery.

Applicants for the position are expected to hold a university degree in Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related discipline, along with experience in WASH emergency programming and community mobilization. Strong communication skills in English are required, while knowledge of Hausa or other local languages is considered an added advantage.

Interested candidates are required to submit their application, including a CV, motivation letter, and three professional references, through the Malteser International job portal. The deadline for applications is 16 June 2026, and submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
