    University of Oslo (UiO) – Department of Social Anthropology is offering three fully-funded PhD research fellowships focused on the anthropology of health and environment across Africa and Europe.

    These fellowships provide an exciting opportunity for ambitious researchers to join an international collaborative network and conduct fieldwork in multiple countries.

    Fellowship Overview

    The PhD positions are part of the HEALENAE doctoral training network (Health and Environment in Africa and Europe), funded by the EU. The network includes 15 PhD candidates working as a cohort across interdisciplinary projects, promoting collaboration between institutions in Europe and Africa.

    Key details:

    • Duration: 3 years
    • Start Date: 1 September 2026
    • Location: Oslo, Norway (residence in or near Oslo required)
    • Salary: NOK 550,800 – 595,800 (~£41,907 – £45,331) per year
    • Working Hours: Full-time
    • Funding: Covers salary, research travel, conferences, equipment, and project dissemination

    Two of the positions are dual degrees with Makerere University in Uganda, and one may involve a joint degree with the University of Cape Town, South Africa. All positions require relocation to Norway, while dual-degree candidates will spend approximately six months at the secondary institution.

    Research Themes

    Applicants will select one of the following research areas within HEALENAE:

    1. Metabolic Impact: Examining agricultural intensification and health transformations (UiO & UCT)
    2. Infrastructures of Toxic Evidence and Civic Protection: Investigating environmental hazards and public response (UiO & MU)
    3. Epidemics and Natural Disasters as ‘Business’: Analyzing socio-economic and cultural dimensions of crisis events (UiO & MU)

    Each candidate will develop a project description as part of the application, demonstrating how their research contributes to the chosen area.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Candidates must meet the following requirements:

    • Master’s degree in social anthropology or closely related field (two years, 120 ECTS) by the application deadline
    • Academic excellence: average grade of A or B (ECTS scale) or 70% and above in percent-based grading
    • Minimum three months of ethnographic fieldwork experience
    • Strong academic writing skills and ability to meet deadlines
    • Willingness to conduct long-term ethnographic research and collaborate across disciplines and institutions
    • Excellent command of English (oral and written) with documentation for admissions at all participating universities

    Applicants cannot:

    • Have resided or conducted main activity in Norway for more than 12 months in the last 36 months
    • Hold a PhD

    African language skills and experience engaging non-academic audiences are considered advantageous.

    • Quality and feasibility of the research project proposal
    • Personal motivation and suitability for interdisciplinary, collaborative work
    • Capacity for public engagement and adherence to ethical research standards
