    Science journalists worldwide now have an exceptional opportunity to gain global exposure and engage with leading mathematicians through the Abel Prize Travel Fellowships 2026. Offered by the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) in collaboration with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, this prestigious fellowship enables selected journalists to attend the renowned Abel Prize Week in Oslo, Norway.

    Scheduled to take place from 25–28 May 2026, the Abel Prize Week celebrates groundbreaking achievements in mathematics and offers unparalleled access to the global scientific community.

    About the Abel Prize Travel Fellowships

    The Abel Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious awards in mathematics. Through this fellowship, two science journalists will be selected to cover the event, interact with top mathematicians, and report on cutting-edge research recognized by the prize.

    Participants will gain exclusive access to official events, including the Abel Prize award ceremony, and will have the opportunity to interview the laureate(s).

    Two fellowships will be awarded:

    • One for a science journalist from anywhere in the world
    • One for a science journalist based in Europe

    What the Fellowship Covers

    The fellowship provides comprehensive support to ensure a seamless experience for selected participants. Benefits include:

    • Round-trip travel costs to Oslo (arranged and reimbursed by WFSJ)
    • Travel health insurance
    • Per diem for ground transportation to and from airports
    • Hotel accommodation (including breakfast) during the program
    • Access to all official Abel Prize Week events
    • Participation in exclusive activities organized by the Norwegian Academy
    • Opportunities to interview Abel Prize laureates
    • Visa support documentation, if required

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be a professional science journalist working full-time (staff or freelance)
    • Have recent experience (within the last five years) in science journalism
    • Preferably demonstrate coverage related to mathematics or fundamental science
    • Be able to attend the full Abel Prize Week from 25–28 May 2026
    • Work across print, digital, broadcast, podcasting, or multimedia platforms

    Application Requirements

    Applicants must submit the following documents:

    • Curriculum Vitae including contact details, professional affiliation, and social media handles (if applicable)
    • A one-page essay (maximum 500 words) in English explaining motivation and intended journalistic work
    • Three samples of published or broadcast work (links to articles, audio, or video)
    • English summaries or translations for non-English work
    • Copy of passport identification page

    Selection Process

    Applications will be reviewed by a jury composed of members of the WFSJ Board or nominees appointed by the Board. Two candidates will be selected based on professional experience, quality of work, and potential impact.
