The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has officially opened applications for its Innovation Accelerator 2026, inviting organizations, refugee-led groups, humanitarian actors, researchers, private sector innovators, and development partners to submit Expressions of Interest for transformative solutions that support forcibly displaced and stateless populations. The application deadline is 12 July 2026 at 11:59 PM CEST (Geneva time).
Supported by the Government of Luxembourg, the UNHCR Innovation Accelerator seeks to bridge the gap between successful pilot projects and sustainable large-scale impact. The initiative is designed for tested innovations that have already demonstrated proof of concept and are ready to expand their reach, strengthen operational effectiveness, and contribute to long-term humanitarian outcomes.
As humanitarian crises become increasingly complex and displacement situations grow more protracted, organizations are under pressure to develop innovative responses that can adapt to rapidly changing realities. While many initiatives demonstrate success at the pilot stage, they often face significant barriers when attempting to scale their impact.
The UNHCR Innovation Accelerator was established to address this challenge by helping organizations transition from experimentation to broader adoption. The programme supports innovations that have already shown operational relevance and community value but require additional partnerships, resources, institutional support, and evidence generation to achieve sustainable growth.
The Accelerator aims to foster adaptive, collaborative, and future-ready humanitarian solutions that remain ethical, participatory, and grounded in humanitarian and human rights principles. Through a structured support pathway, selected initiatives will receive assistance to strengthen their readiness for scale and long-term sustainability.
Selected teams will gain access to a comprehensive package of support designed to help innovations grow beyond localized implementation.
Key benefits include:
The Accelerator also helps participants strengthen strategic planning, governance structures, implementation approaches, and pathways to scale. Teams receive tailored support to refine their value proposition, integrate solutions into broader humanitarian systems, and prepare for sustainable long-term impact.
The Expression of Interest stage is open to organizations with proven innovations that support forcibly displaced or stateless people and demonstrate readiness for scaling. Applicants are encouraged to build collaborative partnerships that combine operational, technical, strategic, and community expertise.
Potential applicants may include:
The programme strongly encourages collaboration between humanitarian, development, academic, government, and private-sector stakeholders to create stronger pathways for sustainable impact.
The selection process takes place in multiple stages.
Applicants must submit evidence demonstrating:
Applications will be screened for eligibility, technical readiness, and strategic relevance. During this stage, the Accelerator team may also facilitate networking opportunities and identify potential collaboration opportunities among applicants.
Selected applicants will be invited to submit a Full Proposal. At this stage, applications must either be led by or jointly submitted with a UNHCR team or a refugee-led organization. Projects must demonstrate previous operational testing, user validation, and preliminary evidence of effectiveness. Concept-only proposals are not eligible.
Applicants will be required to develop a detailed scaling strategy that outlines implementation plans, partnerships, risks, financial considerations, and anticipated outcomes. Proposals will undergo review by technical experts from within and outside UNHCR.
Shortlisted teams will present their initiatives to the Steering Committee through a pitch process. Final decisions will consider technical quality, partnership readiness, strategic alignment, and potential for sustainable impact at scale.
The UNHCR Innovation Accelerator is built around three key principles:
The programme encourages collaboration between refugee-led organizations, NGOs, governments, academia, UN agencies, and private-sector actors to strengthen delivery and support sustainable scaling efforts.
Selected initiatives will receive support to generate evidence, measure impact, and share lessons learned across different operational contexts. This evidence-based approach helps strengthen adoption and scale-up strategies.
The Accelerator prioritizes long-term impact by emphasizing operational readiness, financing pathways, community engagement, and institutional ownership. Meaningful participation of refugee-led organizations and affected communities is strongly encouraged throughout the process.
For organizations working on solutions for displaced and stateless populations, the UNHCR Innovation Accelerator provides a unique platform to move beyond pilot success and achieve system-wide impact. Through funding, technical support, strategic partnerships, and access to UNHCR’s global network, selected initiatives can significantly expand their reach and effectiveness.
Organizations with tested innovations that are ready for the next stage of growth are encouraged to submit their Expression of Interest before the July 12, 2026 deadline and become part of a global effort to create sustainable solutions for some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
