    The Global Water Security Center is seeking passionate professionals for two critical roles: Cartographer and Data Scientist I.

    These positions are part of an applied research center dedicated to addressing global water and environmental security challenges, supporting national security agencies, academia, and private sector partners.

    Cartographer Position

    Location: Remote or On-site at the University of Alabama, USA
    Closing Date: June 14, 2026
    Contract: Full-Time, Salary Range: Cartographer ($53,500 – $66,900)

    Role Overview

    GWSC is looking for a dedicated cartographer committed to transforming complex environmental data into engaging visual stories. The successful candidate will design maps and spatial data representations related to water supply, drought, heat, flooding, and other environmental drivers to inform policymakers and stakeholders worldwide.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Acquire, assess, and integrate geospatial data from diverse sources including government agencies, satellite imagery, and open data repositories
    • Conceptualize and create detailed maps, charts, and spatial information databases
    • Communicate environmental issues through compelling visual storytelling
    • Collaborate with data analysts and scientists to enhance map accuracy and relevance

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Minimum three years of experience creating cartographic products for government, NGOs, or similar organizations
    • Proficiency with GIS tools such as ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ERDAS, RemoteView, ENVI, SOCET GXP
    • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects)
    • Basic programming skills in Python or R are a plus
    • Experience with web development and interactive visualization tools

    Skills & Knowledge

    • Strong understanding of cartographic design principles, including color theory, map projections, and thematic mapping
    • Ability to evaluate and synthesize complex data from multiple sources
    • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

    Data Scientist I Position

    Contract: Full-Time, Salary Range: Data Scientist I ($62,300 – $81,000)

    Role Overview

    GWSC seeks a data scientist to analyze environmental, water, weather, and climate data. The role involves exploratory analysis, developing data workflows, visualization, and communicating insights to support water security solutions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Work with large, multidimensional datasets across disciplines
    • Conduct statistical analyses, including regressions, t-tests, nonparametric tests, and multivariate techniques
    • Develop and implement data workflows and visualization tools
    • Collaborate with researchers to address water security issues

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher with at least two years of data science or analytics experience
    • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required
    • Experience with environmental datasets and statistical analysis
    • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, SQL, MATLAB, or JavaScript

    Skills & Knowledge

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Experience managing large datasets and conducting advanced statistical analyses
    • Knowledge of Bayesian statistics and censored datasets (preferred)
    • Ability to communicate complex findings effectively
