    About the Role

    Wilson Ornithological Society (WOS) is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Communications Specialist to support the society’s mission by managing digital communication channels.

    The successful candidate will help promote WOS activities, scientific research, and bird conservation efforts through various online platforms.

    Key Responsibilities

    Digital Content Management

    • Manage WOS’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky): create, schedule, and publish engaging content about society activities and avian research.
    • Oversee and update the WOS website on WordPress.com, ensuring current and accurate information.
    • Write and publish regular blog posts for the WOS website.
    • Develop and manage a dedicated website for the annual WOS conference.

    Member and Public Engagement

    • Solicit, edit, and post guest blog contributions from bird researchers affiliated with WOS.
    • Compose and distribute email communications, including quarterly newsletters and membership renewal appeals.
    • Monitor and respond to inquiries sent to the main WOS contact email, forwarding questions to relevant committees.

    Conference Support

    • Attend the annual in-person WOS conference, engaging with members and promoting the event via social media. Travel and registration costs are covered.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Strong written communication skills
    • Ability to work independently with proactive stakeholder communication
    • Capability to translate scientific research into accessible digital content
    • Experience with social media scheduling tools (e.g., Later, Buffer)

    • Proficiency with WordPress.com and Canva
    • Past experience managing websites, social media, or newsletters, preferably for nonprofits or academic institutions
    • Interest in birds, ornithology, or scientific societies is a plus
