Journalists across South and Southeast Asia have an exciting opportunity to strengthen their reporting skills through a specialized international training program designed to improve coverage of migration, human rights, and scam trafficking. DW Akademie, in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), is inviting applications for the Navigating Narratives on Migration and Scam Trafficking Training for Journalists, which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 6–8, 2026.
The three-day, practice-oriented training will bring together journalists from selected countries across South and Southeast Asia to explore responsible migration reporting while addressing the growing challenge of scam-related exploitation. Participants will gain practical knowledge, enhance their storytelling skills, and learn how to report ethically on vulnerable populations without compromising their dignity or safety.
Applications are currently open, and interested journalists must submit their applications before July 27, 2026.
Migration continues to be one of the world’s most complex issues, intersecting with human rights, economic opportunities, technology, organized crime, and public policy. Unfortunately, migration is also increasingly linked to online scams, trafficking networks, misinformation, and disinformation campaigns that exploit vulnerable populations.
Recognizing these challenges, DW Akademie and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) have developed a comprehensive regional training aimed at equipping journalists with practical reporting skills that contribute to accurate, ethical, and human-centered journalism.
Rather than focusing solely on theoretical discussions, this workshop emphasizes hands-on learning and practical application. Participants will work through real-world reporting scenarios, engage with experienced trainers, and develop strategies for reporting on migration issues responsibly.
The training seeks to improve public understanding of migration while helping journalists avoid harmful stereotypes and misleading narratives that often surround migration reporting.
The training will be held as follows:
