    Organisation: National Examinations Council (NECO)
    Location: All States Across Nigeria
    Employment Type: Temporary / Ad-hoc (Examination-Based Engagement)

    About NECO

The National Examinations Council (NECO) was established in April 1999 by the Federal Government of Nigeria in response to growing national concerns regarding the conduct, accessibility, and effectiveness of secondary school examinations. Its creation followed widespread agitations for a national examination body capable of addressing Nigeria’s specific educational needs while accommodating the increasing number of candidates sitting for examinations annually.

The origin of these reforms dates back to 1977 during the Murtala/Obasanjo administration, when widespread leakage of the West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) questions led to public outcry. In response, the Federal Government constituted the Sogbetun Commission of Inquiry to investigate the causes and recommend solutions. One of the key findings was that the workload of WAEC had exceeded its operational capacity, affecting the quality and integrity of examination processes.

Among its recommendations was the establishment of additional examination bodies to ease this burden. Although initially unimplemented, these recommendations eventually culminated in the establishment of NECO, which has since played a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s examination system.

NECO is responsible for conducting the following national examinations:
