Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM professions, comprising a smaller share of the workforce, receiving fewer publications, earning lower salaries, and facing barriers to leadership positions compared to their male counterparts.
Despite evidence that women in STEM are on average eight percent more productive, systemic challenges persist.
The gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) remains a significant global challenge.
To address this disparity, the British Council has launched the Women in STEM Scholarship Programme, aimed at increasing opportunities, strengthening female leadership, and fostering a more diverse and gender-representative STEM sector.
The British Council’s initiative focuses on providing educational access to women from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. It offers full scholarships for one-year master’s degree programmes at top-ranking UK universities and research institutions.
These scholarships are designed not only to support academic excellence but also to provide women with career development opportunities in STEM fields.
The programme has been running for six consecutive years and has successfully engaged 43 leading UK universities, awarding approximately 500 scholarships to date.
The Women in STEM scholarships offer comprehensive support, including:
For the 2026-27 academic year, 25 scholarships are available to applicants from South Asia, offered in collaboration with five UK universities. Applicants are encouraged to explore participating universities and the courses they provide. Each application must be submitted directly to the chosen university, and candidates may apply to multiple institutions.
Prospective applicants should review the eligibility criteria carefully, as requirements and application deadlines may vary by university.
Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria and follow each university’s application process. After submission, universities communicate directly with applicants regarding application status and next steps. For any course-specific questions, candidates should contact the relevant university directly.
For broader inquiries or assistance with the application process, the British Council can be reached at womeninstem.scholarships@britishcouncil.org.
These scholarships play a crucial role in addressing gender disparities in STEM. By supporting talented women from underrepresented backgrounds, the programme promotes equitable access to education, strengthens leadership pipelines in science and innovation, and ensures that diverse perspectives contribute to global research and technological advancement.
To support prospective applicants, the British Council offers online information sessions, such as the upcoming session with Brunel University. These sessions provide guidance on applications, eligibility, and scholarship benefits, helping candidates navigate the process efficiently.
The British Council Women in STEM Scholarship Programme represents a transformative opportunity for women seeking advanced education and career growth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
By providing full financial support, access to world-class universities, and professional networking opportunities, the scholarships empower female scientists to drive innovation, research, and leadership in STEM globally.
