    The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), implemented by Chemonics International, is seeking a highly skilled to support its global food security analysis efforts. This consultancy offers an opportunity to contribute to impactful research aimed at preventing food insecurity and famine through data-driven insights and market analysis.

    Since its establishment in 1985, FEWS NET has provided early warning and actionable intelligence to the U.S. Government and international partners on food insecurity trends. Now in its eighth phase (FEWS NET 8), the project continues to strengthen global capacity to understand and respond to food security challenges.

    Project Overview

    The FEWS NET 8 Knowledge Base (KB) is a $65 million initiative designed to enhance the organization’s understanding of market systems that influence food security outcomes.

    The project focuses on:

    • Monitoring commodity markets critical to food access and income generation
    • Improving analysis of food availability, affordability, and access
    • Supporting evidence-based scenario development and decision-making
    • Building a long-term knowledge base valid for 5–10 years

    Market Fundamentals (MF) research plays a key role by analyzing how markets function during a typical year, particularly for commodities essential to poor households’ livelihoods.

    Position Summary

    The Consultant will support Market Fundamentals research activities across multiple countries, contributing to the development of country-level MF Reports. The role emphasizes quantitative analysis, literature review, and report writing, with occasional leadership in drafting full reports depending on project needs.

    The assignment is expected to run from May to October 2026, with a full-time level of effort over six months.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Consultant will work under the guidance of the Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) for Market Fundamentals and collaborate closely with the FEWS NET Knowledge Base team.

    Desk Research

    • Identify and source secondary quantitative datasets related to agriculture, markets, and food security
    • Compile relevant literature from national and international sources
    • Document methodologies, data gaps, and limitations to ensure transparency

    Literature Review

    • Critically review and synthesize findings on market systems and food security dynamics
    • Develop structured summaries to inform report writing

    Quantitative Analysis

    • Analyze production trends, price data, and socioeconomic indicators
    • Develop data visualizations, including charts and tables
    • Support development of reproducible scripts using tools such as:
      • R
      • Python
      • Stata
    • Ensure consistency in analytical approaches across countries

    Report Writing

    • Draft sections of MF Reports or coordinate multi-author contributions
    • Incorporate feedback from technical leads and stakeholders
    • Ensure outputs meet FEWS NET’s analytical standards and are clearly communicated

    Collaboration and Communication

    • Maintain regular communication with project teams
    • Participate in meetings, briefings, and coordination calls
    • Contribute to documentation of methodologies and lessons learned

    Deliverables

    For each country supported, the Consultant will provide:

    • Cleaned and organized datasets
    • Documented analytical scripts
    • Literature and resource compilations
    • Visual outputs (charts, tables, graphics)
    • Draft report sections and summaries

    Required Qualifications

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, development economics, applied statistics, or related field
    • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) preferred

    Experience

    • Minimum five years of professional experience in quantitative research or applied economics
    • Experience in international development, particularly in food security, agriculture, or poverty analysis
    • Strong skills in statistical analysis tools (R, Python, Stata, or equivalent)
    • Experience working with household survey data such as:
      • LSMS
      • DHS
      • HEA

    Skills

    • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills
    • Proven ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings
    • Excellent report writing and communication skills
    • Ability to manage multiple workstreams in a remote environment
    • Fluency in English; additional languages (French or Spanish) are an advantage

    Work Environment and Location

    • Fully remote (United States-based) consultancy
    • No travel required
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States
    • Collaboration conducted entirely through virtual platforms

    Duration and Supervision

    • Duration: Approximately six months (May–October 2026)
    • Reporting to: Deputy Chief of Party (Market Fundamentals)
