Overview

The Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP) at the University of Toronto is a prestigious funding initiative designed to support exceptional postdoctoral researchers, with a focus on expanding opportunities for Indigenous and Black scholars.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to Indigenous and/or Black researchers, including domestic and international applicants.

Nominees must:

• Demonstrate academic excellence and strong research potential.
• Identify as Indigenous to Turtle Island and/or Black.
• Hold a doctoral degree by the fellowship start date (earned within the last five years).
• Not have previously received the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Successful fellows must also commence the fellowship by January 2027 and work under a University of Toronto supervisor affiliated with a graduate unit.

Benefits

The fellowship provides $80,000 per year for up to two years to support the salary and employment costs of a postdoctoral fellow. This funding aligns with Canada’s most competitive postdoctoral awards.

Additionally, fellows receive a $5,000 annual start-up stipend for early research activities. Faculties and departments may supplement funding.

The program aims to increase the recruitment of Indigenous and Black postdoctoral researchers, strengthen research capacity, foster inclusive excellence, and help the university attract top international talent.

How to Apply

Prospective fellows cannot apply directly; they must be nominated by their faculty.

The application process involves:

• Contacting a potential supervisor or faculty advisor.
• Coordinating with the Faculty Research Office to meet internal deadlines.
• Submitting a complete nomination package to the School of Graduate Studies.

Each faculty may nominate up to three candidates per self-identification category.
