The GreenShift Ambassador Program 2026 is an exciting youth leadership initiative designed to empower young changemakers in Nepal to take an active role in promoting sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the transition toward a circular economy. The program forms part of the GreenShift Nepal project—Circularity of Plastic Waste for Net-Zero Carbon Nepal, which is funded by the European Union and implemented through a consortium led by CREASION, in partnership with Restless Development Nepal and Youth Innovation Lab (YI-LAB).
This volunteer-based initiative seeks to select dedicated youth leaders from Bagmati, Lumbini, and Madhesh provinces who are passionate about climate action, community engagement, and sustainable development. Selected ambassadors will play a key role in raising awareness about responsible plastic waste management, circular economy principles, and environmental stewardship.
The program will run for three months from May to July 2026, during which participants will engage in training programs, community outreach initiatives, sustainability campaigns, and policy advocacy efforts related to environmental protection and plastic waste management.
The GreenShift: Circularity of Plastic Waste for Net-Zero Carbon Nepal initiative is a multi-year environmental program designed to promote a just transition toward a circular economy in Nepal.
According to the project overview provided in the program document, GreenShift Nepal is a four-year project implemented in nine municipalities, with three municipalities each in Bagmati, Madhesh, and Lumbini provinces.
The project works collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, including:
Waste management enterprises
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
Civil society organizations
Waste workers
Youth groups
Educational institutions
Government bodies at local, provincial, and national levels
The primary goal is to promote circular economy principles in plastic waste management, ensuring that materials are reused, recycled, and repurposed rather than disposed of in landfills or polluting ecosystems.
By engaging communities, businesses, and policymakers, GreenShift Nepal aims to contribute significantly to the country’s net-zero carbon ambitions and environmental sustainability goals.
The GreenShift Ambassador program is an integral component of the broader #GreenShift campaign, which seeks to mobilize youth leadership in driving sustainable environmental practices.
Currently in its third year, the campaign has already supported numerous youth-led initiatives across Nepal.
The ambassador program specifically focuses on empowering young people to:
Promote environmental awareness
Advocate for responsible plastic waste management
Encourage community participation in sustainability initiatives
Support the transition to a circular economy
The program also aims to expand the GreenShift campaign’s reach into Bagmati, Lumbini, and Madhesh provinces, strengthening youth engagement and leadership in these regions.
Through this initiative, the project aims to educate, empower, and mobilize youth leaders, ensuring they become key contributors to Nepal’s sustainable development journey.
The primary objective of the GreenShift Ambassador initiative is to identify and train youth leaders who can drive sustainability-focused initiatives in their communities.
Key objectives include:
Selecting dedicated youth ambassadors from the target provinces.
Promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
Engaging local communities in plastic waste reduction and recycling initiatives.
Encouraging youth participation in environmental advocacy and policy dialogue.
Strengthening collaboration between youth, government institutions, and civil society organizations.
Through these objectives, the initiative seeks to foster a strong sense of ownership and responsibility among young leaders.
GreenShift Ambassadors will serve as community champions who lead sustainability activities, collaborate with stakeholders, and mobilize citizens to adopt environmentally responsible behaviors.
The program aims to generate a ripple effect of environmental awareness and proactive engagement throughout communities in Nepal.
Selected ambassadors will play a pivotal role in organizing sustainability initiatives such as:
Educational workshops
Environmental awareness campaigns
Plastic waste reduction programs
Community clean-up drives
Tree planting activities
Youth-led advocacy initiatives
These efforts are expected to contribute not only to immediate environmental improvements but also to long-term behavioral change within communities.
By bridging the gap between policy frameworks and grassroots implementation, GreenShift Ambassadors will help ensure that sustainability policies translate into real-world action.
The ultimate vision of the program is to nurture a generation of environmentally responsible citizens who are committed to building a greener and more sustainable Nepal.
