The Horn Center for Democracy (HCD) has officially opened applications for the first cohort of the Youth Leadership for Democracy and Solidarity (YLDS) Program 2026, a prestigious regional leadership initiative designed to empower emerging youth leaders across the Horn of Africa.
The program seeks to nurture a new generation of democratic leaders by providing intensive leadership training, civic education, mentorship, regional networking opportunities, and collaborative learning experiences.
Young people remain one of the greatest forces for democratic transformation across the Horn of Africa. However, despite representing a significant percentage of the population, many young leaders continue to face barriers to meaningful participation in governance, civic engagement, and policy-making.
To help bridge this gap, the Horn Center for Democracy is implementing the Youth Leadership for Democracy and Solidarity (YLDS) Program as part of its long-term Youth Development Strategy, aimed at strengthening democratic governance, civic participation, regional cooperation, and youth leadership across the Horn of Africa.
Successful applicants will join a select cohort of only 15 emerging youth leaders from across the region.
The Youth Leadership for Democracy and Solidarity (YLDS) is a regional leadership development initiative created to strengthen democratic values, encourage civic participation, and build cross-border cooperation among young leaders.
The program combines leadership education with practical democratic engagement, allowing participants to learn directly from democracy practitioners, governance experts, academics, and experienced civic leaders from across Africa.
Rather than being a one-time training event, YLDS serves as the beginning of a long-term regional network of democratic leaders who will continue collaborating through mentorship, partnerships, and alumni engagement.
