The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS), in partnership with the Dutch Foundation for Literature (Nederlands Letterenfonds), has officially opened applications for the 2026 Nederlands Letterenfonds Fellowship, offering established literary writers from the Caribbean Parts of the Kingdom a unique opportunity to pursue an independent writing project within an international academic environment.
The prestigious five-month fellowship provides financial support, subsidised accommodation, research facilities, and access to a multidisciplinary community of scholars and researchers. Applications are open from 6 July 2026 and will close on 25 August 2026 at 12:00 noon CET.
The fellowship is designed to support literary writers by providing dedicated time and resources to develop a writing project while engaging with academics from diverse disciplines.
Successful applicants will participate in the programme from February to July 2027.

The Nederlands Letterenfonds Fellowship builds on the long-running Writer-in-Residence programme, which began in 1999 through a partnership between NIAS and the Dutch Foundation for Literature.
For the 2026–2027 edition, the fellowship specifically seeks to strengthen literary representation from the Caribbean Parts of the Kingdom while promoting dialogue between literature, scholarship, and society.
The programme encourages interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together writers and researchers working across various academic fields.

The Dutch Foundation for Literature will first assess applications for eligibility before forwarding qualifying submissions to an independent ranking committee.

Only one fellow will be selected for the 2026–2027 programme.
