    About the Fellowship

The Nederlands Letterenfonds Fellowship builds on the long-running Writer-in-Residence programme, which began in 1999 through a partnership between NIAS and the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

For the 2026–2027 edition, the fellowship specifically seeks to strengthen literary representation from the Caribbean Parts of the Kingdom while promoting dialogue between literature, scholarship, and society.

The programme encourages interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together writers and researchers working across various academic fields.

    Selection Process

Applications will be assessed based on:

    • Literary quality of previous work
    • Quality and feasibility of the proposed project
    • Suitability of both applicant and project for the NIAS academic environment

Following the committee’s recommendations, NIAS—together with its Academic Advisory Board—will make the final selection.

Only one fellow will be selected for the 2026–2027 programme.

    Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit their applications according to the guidelines provided by the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

Interested candidates are encouraged to carefully review all eligibility conditions before applying.

Applicants should ensure they meet the language requirements and possess a clearly defined literary project that aligns with the objectives of the fellowship.

    Why This Fellowship Matters

The fellowship represents a significant opportunity for Caribbean literary voices to gain international visibility while working within one of Europe’s leading interdisciplinary research institutes.

By supporting writers with financial resources, academic engagement, and dedicated writing time, the programme seeks to strengthen literary production and encourage meaningful exchanges between literature and scholarship.

The initiative also reinforces the Dutch Foundation for Literature’s broader mission of promoting literature in Dutch, Frisian, Papiamentu, Papiamento, and Dutch Sign Language while expanding international collaboration across the Kingdom.
