The National Research Foundation (NRF) is offering Postdoctoral Fellowships for 2027 to support emerging researchers in South Africa. This program aims to strengthen research capacity, foster innovation, and cultivate the next generation of scientists across various disciplines.

Requirements

Applicants must:

Undertake research at a public research institution in South Africa.
Have obtained their doctoral degree within the past five years, or be on track to complete by December 31, 2026.
The fellowship must be taken up by June 30, 2027.
Full-time employees must take unpaid leave.
Second-time applicants must pursue a new research project; third-time applications are not eligible.

Citizenship Eligibility

Freestanding and Innovation Fellowships: South African citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants.
Scarce Skills Fellowships: South African citizens and permanent residents only.

Benefits

The fellowship provides funding for up to two years, including:

Annual stipend: R320,000 (non-taxable)
Research costs contribution: R50,000 per year
Institutional support contribution: Minimum of R15,000 from the host institution

Additional support may be available for female fellows taking maternity leave and researchers with disabilities (up to R20,000 for assistive technology).
