About Anthropocene Alliance (A2)

Anthropocene Alliance (A2) is the largest coalition of frontline communities in the United States dedicated to environmental protection and environmental justice.

The organization currently represents more than 430 member organizations working across the United States and its territories. These grassroots groups are directly affected by climate change, pollution, flooding, mining, environmental degradation, and other environmental challenges.

Rather than working independently, A2 helps unite these organizations, strengthens their collective voice, and supports coordinated advocacy efforts aimed at influencing environmental policies and promoting long-term systems change.

About the Policy & Advocacy Fellow Position

The Policy & Advocacy Fellow will play a central role in strengthening the policy capacity of frontline communities.

Working closely with member organizations, the successful candidate will help transform local environmental concerns into coordinated advocacy campaigns that can influence policy at state and local levels.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) and is completely remote, allowing qualified applicants based anywhere in the United States to apply.

The appointment is initially for two years, with the possibility of becoming a permanent position depending on future funding.

The role is funded through the newly established Strengthening Human Infrastructure Project (SHIP) at the Aspen Global Change Institute, where Anthropocene Alliance serves as one of the core partners.

Key Responsibilities

The Policy & Advocacy Fellow will contribute across three major areas:

1. Campaign Strategy and Networked Action

The successful candidate will:

• Analyze advocacy campaigns led by A2 member organizations.
• Identify opportunities for coordinated action across multiple states.
• Develop practical campaign strategies that can be adapted by organizations with varying levels of capacity.
• Produce advocacy resources including:
  • Model ordinances
  • Sample legislation
  • Campaign planning guides
  • Messaging frameworks
  • Advocacy toolkits
  • Talking points
• Coordinate multi-state advocacy campaigns.
• Organize national and regional “Days of Action.”
• Track campaign outcomes and policy achievements.

2. Member Training and Capacity Building

Responsibilities include:

• Leading policy and advocacy trainings.
• Coaching grassroots organizations.
• Building members’ understanding of policy processes.
• Supporting organizations engaging with:
  • Public Service Commissions
  • Zoning boards
  • Local government agencies
  • Regional authorities
• Helping members prepare:
  • Public comments
  • Testimony
  • Advocacy actions

It is important to note that this role does not involve direct lobbying activities.

3. Learning, Collaboration, and Documentation

The Fellow will also:

• Facilitate peer-learning sessions among member organizations.
• Represent Anthropocene Alliance within the SHIP coalition.
• Share best practices across partner organizations.
• Document successful advocacy approaches.
• Monitor participation trends and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Strengthen collaboration across the national network.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should demonstrate:

• Minimum of two years of professional experience in policy, advocacy, community organizing, or related fields.
• Experience in environmental justice, climate action, or social justice initiatives is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of local and state policy-making processes.
• Ability to convert complex policy issues into practical advocacy resources.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• Experience facilitating workshops and training sessions.
• Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
